Raleigh, NC – In what was a hard fought game for the Bears of Shaw University (2-11; 0-6 CIAA) that came down to the wire in a hard fought loss against the Eagles of North Carolina Central University (6-6; 2-4 CIAA). What a game it was between these two teams who have been looking for that win for so long. The Bears will just have to wait a little while longer to get that win as they went to work tonight in a tough loss in C.C. Spaulding Gymnasium.

In the first half, Shaw was back and forth with NC Central as they went into halftime knotted up at 29 all. The Bears shot only 37% from the floor and scored 12 points in the paint and 14 points off turnovers in the first. Shaw only had seven turnovers in the first half while the Eagles had nine. NC Central shot 46% from the floor and 44% beyond the 3-point arc. At the break with score knotted up the Bears would look for ways to take and keep the lead.

In the second half, the Bears fought hard and stayed at it the entire half shooting 34% from the floor and 61% from the charity stripe. Defense was the key for the Bears in one of their lowest scoring games of the season this far. Mike Baker (6’1, JR, Guard, Jacksonville, FL) led in the second with eight points.

The Bears showed their defensive side in holding the Eagles to only 29 points a half. Shaw scored 20 points in the paint, 22 points off turnovers, and 15 points off the bench. In the end it was just not enough as the Bears loss to the Eagles by four points. John Kornegay (5’11, SO, Guard, Detroit, MI) was the leading scorer for the Bears with 15 points and 5 rebounds.

The Bears are on the road as they travel to Bowie, MD to face the Bulldogs of Bowie State University on January 13th. Game time is 7:30 p.m.
