January 4, 2007

Orangeburg, SC Damola Obadina records another double-double tonight against the Panthers of Claflin University with 11 points and 11 rebounds. Despite being down by as many as 14 points in the second the Bears of Shaw University (2-8, 1-3 CIAA) still put up a great fight against the Panthers of Claflin University (5-6) in a 56-60 loss.

In the first half, Shaw shot only 30% from the floor and 16% from the beyond the 3-point arc, while the Panthers shot 26% from the floor and 12% from beyond the 3-point arc. Although the Bears shot a better half percentage wise the Panthers out scored Shaw 24-18 in the first half.

In the second half, the Bears shot 33% from the floor and only 14% from beyond the 3-point arc. They were led by Jonathan Mudd who scored 11 points in the half. Shaw scored 16 points in the paint, 16 off of turnovers, and 24 second chance points. Shaw out scored Claflin in the second half 38-36 but it proved not to be enough as the Panthers held off the Bears 56-60.

After all the dusk had cleared the Bears had Mudd, Obadina, and Melvin Smith all in double figures while the Panthers had three as well with Jackson, Brown, and Starr. It seemed that no matter what the Bears did it was just not enough to hold the Panthers down. This was a tough game for both teams but in the end the Panthers hit a few more shots than the Bears.

Shaw will be back ion action on Saturday, January 6th as they host Saint Augustine’s College at Broughton High School. Game time is 7:30 pm.
