BEARS HOLD OFF ECSU VIKINGS 80-76
Raleigh, NC – The Shaw
University Bears snapped a two game slide with a 80-76 win over the
Vikings of Elizabeth City State University in a CIAA Eastern Division
match-up at Spaulding Gymnasium. The win improved the Bears to 3-3 in
the East and 5-16 overall, while the Vikings dropped to 3-3 and 8-10
In a game that saw eight lead changes,
SU took the lead for good 60-59 on a Daniel Jackson free throw with 6:33
left in the game. Robert Espinosa gave the Bears their biggest lead of
the game 71-53 on a lay-up with 1:44 left, but it was Melvin Smith who
sealed the victory at the line connecting on six of six free throws.
The Bears had four to finish in double
figures led by Melvin Smith who finished with 19 points and eight
rebounds. Daniel Jackson finished with 17 points and nine rebounds,
Robert Espinosa had a career high 16 points and James Rosebud 14. The
Bears won the rebounding battle 46-39.
Pacing the Vikings was Mitchell
Moffatt 17 points, Devin Mooring 12 and Courtney Castro 11.
