BEARS FALL 69-49 TO VUU PANTHERS
Raleigh, NC – The Shaw
University Bears could not hold back the Panthers of Virginia Union
University and dropped a CIAA Eastern Division match-up 69-49. The win
clinched the East title for the Panthers and improved the defending CIAA
and National Champs to 18-3 and 7-1. The Bears fall to 5-19 and 3-6 in
the East.
With a 30-28 halftime lead, Virginia
Union came out of the locker room and took control of the game with 11
unanswered points and a 41-28 lead as Darius Hargrove made two from the
charity strip with 17:40 left in the game. A three pointer by SU’s
Melvin Smith cut the lead to 10 (43-33) with 14:48 left, but the Bears
were unable to get any closer.
VUU’s Hargrove led all scorers with 25
and he also had eight rebounds. Brad Byerson and Duan Crocket also
paced the Panthers with 19 and 18 points respectively.
SU’s Daniel Jackson had a
double-double with 15 points and a game high 10 rebounds. Smith also
finished with 15 points.
