Bears Go 1-1 in Tournament

The Shaw men's basketball team finished 1-1 in the Florida Gulf Coast New Years Tournament in Ft. Myers, FL.  The Bears won on Friday beating New Jersey Tech 81-63.  Anthony Greenup had perhaps the best game of his Shaw career scoring 34 points and grabbing nine rebounds.  The Highlanders kept it close in the first half as Shaw led only 38-37 at halftime.  The Bears blew it open in the second half, shooting 58 percent from the floor, while holding Tech to 9-of-22 shooting in the second half.

In the championship game on Saturday against host Florida Gulf Coast, Greenup and Cordell Maxwell picked up three fouls a-piece in the first half.  Maxwell got hot at the end of the half, however and hit a three-pointer with four seconds remaining in the half to give the Bears a 29-26 halftime lead.  In the second half the Eagles, who average 99 points per game, picked it up in the second half and began to run.  Anthony Greenup was called for his fifth personal foul on an offensive foul call that could have gone either way.  Ryan Hopkins poured in 25 points on 7-of-17 from three-point range.  The Eagles outrebounded the Bears 48 to 34 including 24 offensive rebounds.

The Bears are now 3-7 and will begin CIAA play on Tuesday at Elizabeth City State at 7:30 p.m.
