Bears Lose Third Straight

Anthony Greenup's game-high 23 points was not enough as Shaw fell to Virginia State 75-73 at Daniel Gymnasium.

For the first five minutes there were three lead changes as both teams traded baskets.  The Trojans (1-1, 1-1, 7-6) began to pull away going up 21-13 on a lay-up by Michael askew with 10:40 remaining in the first half.  Shaw went on a 10-2 run over the next two minutes, capped off by Darius Acuff's (16 points) four-point play which tied the score at 23-23 at the 8:40 mark.  Malik Carter's jumper with :06 remaining in the half, gave Virginia State a 45-31 halftime lead.  Two free throws by Brian Henderson with 15:10 remaining in the game gave the Trojans their biggest lead of the game at 54-35.  The Trojans would feed the ball on the block to Kanandi Hall (18 points), who was unstoppable.

But Shaw (1-2, 1-3, 4-10) would hang around and cut the lead to 63-54 on a lay-up by Ricky Williams (11 points) with 9:29 remaining.  The Bears kept fighting with scrappy defense and Greenup scored seven of Shaw's next 15 points.  Two free throws by Williams cut the Bear deficit to 71-68 with 3:45 remaining.  Cordell Maxwell jumper at the 2:15 mark pulled the Bears to within 71-70.  But the Trojans came up with two key offensive rebounds over the next 1:51 and led 74-70 on a lay-up by Henderson with :24 remaining.  Michael McLeod's (11 points) three-pointer with :17 remaining pulled the Bears to within 74-73.  Ade' Mason hit a free throw with :09 to put the Trojans up by two.  Williams got the ball up quickly and took a shot in the lane with :04 that was partially blocked by Avis Wyatt and Maxwell's follow missed as time expired.

Hasan Saboor was also in double figures for the Trojans with 12 points.

Shaw will host Winston-Salem State on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. in Spaulding Gymnasium.
