Shaw Halts Three-Game Slide
Anthony
Greenup’s putback off a Bear miss with seven seconds remaining proved to be
the game-winning shot as Shaw nipped Virginia State 76-75 in Spaulding
Gymnasium.
Greenup was unstoppable scoring a career-high 36 points on 15-of-22 shooting
and grabbing a career-high 17 rebounds.
Shaw (5-4, 8-7, 11-14) went down
13-3 on a three-pointer by Hassan Saboor (11 points) with 15 minutes 33
seconds remaining in the first half. The Bears pulled to within 13-12 on a
three-pointer by Cordell Maxwell (15 points) at 13:15 of the first. Two
free throws by Damon Harrison gave the Bears a 30-22 lead at the 5:18 mark
of the first half. When it looked as if the Trojans were down they made a
run.
Virginia State went on a 15-5 run over the next 5:18 and led 37-35 at
halftime. Shaw came out fast in the second half and led and continued its
momentum late into the half. Shaw led 64-56 on a dunk by Greenup with 7:18
remaining. A 10-0 Virginia State (2-7, 7-7, 13-12) over the next three
minutes gave the Trojans the lead as Michael Askew’s three-pointer with 5:29
remaining capped off the run.
The lead would change hand seven
times before Bryan Scott’s lay-up with 17 seconds remaining put the Trojans
up 75-74. Greenup would get his game-winning putback off a Darius Acuff
miss giving Shaw the lead. Virginia State had one more chance, calling
timeout with 4.4 seconds remaining. The Trojans got the ball into Avis
Wyatt who missed a five footer as time expired. Wyatt was 0-4 from the
field. Bryan Scott and Ade’ Mason had 15 points a-piece for Virginia State
Shaw will play its final regular
season game on Thursday at Virginia Union at 7:30 p.m.
Note: Three Bear seniors were honored before the game as they played their last game at Spaulding Gymnasium. Cordell Maxwell, Michael, McLeod and Anthony Greenup.
