The Shaw baseball team defeated
St. Paul
’s on Wednesday in the play-in game to make itself eligible
for the 2005 CIAA Baseball Championship. The Bears took a
step closer to making it to the championship game, be defeating
cross-town rival
St. Augustine
’s 7-4 in the double elimination tournament played at Whaley
Colbert Field.
The game was scoreless in until the fourth when Gerrard
Everett’s bases loaded single scored Averil Bryant giving Shaw
the 1-0 lead. Jarel Walter then scored on a wild pitch
giving Shaw the 2-0 lead.
St. Augustine
’s would tie the game at 2-2 in the sixth on a two-out single
by Baker which scored Cloud. Shaw (15-17) scored one in
the sixth and broke the game open with four runs in the fourth,
the highlight being a Bryant two-run double as Shaw led 7-2.
Kevin White (4-3) went nine innings giving up two earned runs,
six hits and striking out nine. Shaw will face
Elizabeth
City
State
at noon tomorrow.
