SHAW SWEEPS ST. AUGUSTINE’S
IN BASEBALL BROADCAST DEBUT
March 22, 2008 – Raleigh, NC – The
Shaw University Bears Baseball Team claimed consecutive conquests
against their rivals, the Saint Augustine’s Falcons. Local Tri-cities Top 25
Radio Station WAUG-AM 750 aired game one live for the first time ever. The
Bears concluded their radio debut defeating the Falcons, 11 – 4.
Shaw’s towering momentum spilled over into game two as they downed St.
Augustine’s, 10 – 6.
At the top of game one, SAC skied to an early 2 – 0 lead after freshman catcher #14 Josh Bishop led off the top of the first inning with a homeroom to leftfield and then two batters later, senior infielder #16 Fidell George followed suit for the same result. Nevertheless, in the bottom of the first, twin brothers #16 Avery Bryant (6 – 1 / 220 / Catcher / First Base / Right/Right / Senior / Laurinburg, NC) and #22 Averill Bryant (6 – 1 / 200 / Outfield / Right/Right / Senior / Laurinburg, NC) were credited with two runs batted in (RBIs) each as Shaw surfaced to lead 5 – 2. The Bears short-circuited SAC’s offense to just two more runs for the remainder of the game; where as Shaw kept their offensive motors running to score six runs through the bottom of the fourth inning. Shaw’s #17 Edgar Huff (6 – 1 / 185 / Pitcher / Right/Right / Junior / Hubert, NC) was credited with the win as he had five strikeouts in seven innings. The Bears top performers were Bryant and Bryant as they combined for eight of the 10 run batted in. Averill Bryant went three of four from the plate as Avery Bryant went two of three.
In game two, Shaw took a 7 – 1 lead after scoring five runs off of four hits in the bottom of the third inning. SAC immediately threatened to strike for a comeback as they scored five runs in the top of the fourth off of three hits and two errors charged to the Shaw. Fortunately, Shaw tacked on three more runs and kept the Falcons from crossing home plate in the final three innings. The Bears top performer was Averill Bryant as he had three hits of four at bats for three runs batted in. Shaw’s #10 Jeffrey Cannon (5 – 7 / 160 / Pitcher/Infielder / Right/Right / Junior/ Detroit, MI) took home the win after he tallied seven strikeouts in seven innings.
