BASEBALL SWEEPS EASTERN DIVISION FOE, ECSU


April 2, 2008 Elizabeth City, NC – The Shaw University Baseball Team had a successful road trip after they downed their eastern division foe, the Elizabeth City State University Vikings, for consecutive conference conquests. Shaw won game one 12 – 2 and followed with a 4 – 1 win in game two.
 

In game one, Shaw batted in 12 runs off of 10 hits. The Bears crossed home plate for eight of those scores in the top of the second inning. Shaw’s defensive fort stood tall as they did not commit any errors and only allowed ECSU to score one run in the bottom of the second and then the sixth inning. Both Shaw’s junior #10 Jeffrey Cannon (5 – 7 / 160 / Pitcher/Infield / R/R / Detroit, MI) and senior #16 Avery Bryant (6 – 1 / 220 / Catcher/First Base / R/R / Laurinburg, NC) each recorded a double. In addition, Cannon was two-for-five at the plate with three runs scored as Bryant was two-for-five with one run scored. The Bears freshman pitcher #4 Roy Maddox (5 – 5 / 155 / Pitcher/Shortstop / R/R / Mechanicville, MD) was awarded the win as he pitched seven innings with two strikeouts.  

Shaw’s Avery Bryant crossed home plate in the top of the second inning in game two to give the Bears a 1 – 0 lead. Both opponents went scoreless in the third inning, but the Bears opened up the close contest with two runs scored in the fourth and then their final score in the fifth.  The Bears senior #20 Michael Grant (6 – 0 / 175 / Pitcher/Outfield / R/R / Woodland, NC) led as he contributed two hits and two runs scored off of three at bats. The winning pitcher was freshman #23 Walter Hart (6 – 0 / 196 / R/R / Detroit, MI) as he pitched seven innings for three strikeouts and to hold ECSU to two hits and one run.

The Bears’ next competition is Saturday (April 5th) against Lincoln University in Lincoln, Pennsylvania. The doubleheader will begin at 1:00 p.m.
