Shaw Takes two from Cross-town Rival

Shaw defeated St. Augustine’s in doubleheader baseball action 16-8 in game one and 12-7 in game two.  Game two was suspended due to darkness but since the game went past the fifth inning, Shaw was awarded the victory.

In game one, Shaw jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning, capitalizing on three St. Augustine’s errors.  Brandon Smith led the game off with a single, then stole second base and advanced to third on a throwing error by Michael Swann.  Jermaine Rogers tripled in Smith and Shaw led 1-0.  Shaw took the 2-0 lead when LaPrince Radcliffe’s groundout scored Rogers.

St. Augustine’s would touch starter Eric Rice (4-2) up for one run in the first as Charles Whitiker groundout scored Jermaine McDougal cutting the Shaw lead to 2-1.  Shaw scored two more runs in the second, again taking advantage of Falcon errors this time with two outs.  Gerrard Everette reached third on an error by Kelly Gonzalez.  Kelvin White’s two-run single scored Everette and Smith and Shaw led 4-1.  Rice was solid over the next five innings.  St. Augustine’s did score five runs in the seventh inning, but Rice secured the complete game victory giving striking out seven.  Travis Salley had three hits for the Bears while Rogers, White and Jarel Walter had two hits a-piece.  Whitiker was 2-for- with 4 RBI and Azor Cloud also had two hits.  Falcon starter Ryan Torrance gave up 10 runs on nine hits and struck out four in taking the loss.

In game two, Shaw (9-10, 5-1) took a 1-0 lead in its half of the first but three Bear errors allowed the Falcons (7-12) to take a 2-1 lead at the end of one.  Shaw was also successful in this game scoring runs with two outs in the inning as a two-out single by Smith in the second scored Salley tying the score at 2-2.  With two men on, Rogers’ two-run double down the right field line gave Shaw the 4-2 lead.  The Bears capped off their six-run second as William Sanders’ double drove in three runs and Shaw led 6-2.

Jarmanes Pair began to settle down and Shaw would only score one run over the next four innings.  The Falcons trailed 7-2 in the bottom of the sixth but rallied as a Swann triple scored Sterling Walker.  Craig Davis hit a three-run triple to cap off the inning and St. Augustine’s trailed 7-6.  Shaw would rally as they would get only one hit in the top of the seventh, but two more St. Augustine’s errors allowed for four Bear runs giving Shaw the 12-7 cushion as the game was called due to darkness.  Rogers drove in four runs for the Bears and Davis drove in three runs for the Falcons.

LaPrince Radcliffe (1-2) picked up his first victory of the season.  Pair went six innings giving up eight runs on seven hits, while striking out six.
