Shaw Takes two from Cross-town Rival
Shaw defeated St. Augustine’s
in doubleheader baseball action 16-8 in game one and 12-7 in game two.
Game two was suspended due to darkness but since the game
went past the fifth inning, Shaw was awarded the victory.
St. Augustine’s would touch starter Eric
Rice (4-2) up for one run in the first as Charles Whitiker groundout scored
Jermaine McDougal cutting the Shaw lead to 2-1.
Shaw scored two more runs in the second, again taking advantage of
Falcon errors this time with two outs. Gerrard
Everette reached third on an error by Kelly Gonzalez.
Kelvin White’s two-run single scored Everette and Smith and Shaw led
4-1. Rice was solid over the next
five innings. St. Augustine’s
did score five runs in the seventh inning, but Rice secured the complete game
victory giving striking out seven. Travis
Salley had three hits for the Bears while Rogers, White and Jarel Walter had
two hits a-piece. Whitiker was
2-for- with 4 RBI and Azor Cloud also had two hits.
Falcon starter Ryan Torrance gave up 10 runs on nine hits and struck out
four in taking the loss.
In game two, Shaw (9-10, 5-1) took a 1-0 lead in its
half of the first but three Bear errors allowed the Falcons (7-12) to take a 2-1 lead
at the end of one. Shaw was also
successful in this game scoring runs with two outs in the inning as a two-out
single by Smith in the second scored Salley tying the score at 2-2.
With two men on, Rogers’ two-run double down the right field line gave
Shaw the 4-2 lead. The Bears
capped off their six-run second as William Sanders’ double drove in three
runs and Shaw led 6-2.
Jarmanes Pair began to settle down and Shaw
would only score one run over the next four innings.
The Falcons trailed 7-2 in the bottom of the sixth but rallied as a
Swann triple scored Sterling Walker. Craig
Davis hit a three-run triple to cap off the inning and St. Augustine’s
trailed 7-6. Shaw would rally as they would get only one hit in the top of
the seventh, but two more St. Augustine’s errors allowed for four Bear runs
giving Shaw the 12-7 cushion as the game was called due to darkness.
Rogers drove in four runs for the Bears and Davis drove in three runs
for the Falcons.
LaPrince Radcliffe (1-2) picked up his first victory of the season. Pair went six innings giving up eight runs on seven hits, while striking out six.
