Shaw Loses Season Opener

Mount OliveZach Nichols’ three-run homer capped an eight-run first inning as host Mount Olive defeated Shaw 11-1 Tuesday in non-conference baseball action. Mount Olive scored all of its first-inning runs with two outs. 

Brandon Smith led off the game with a walk, the stole second.  A single by Kelvin White moved Smith to third.  Jermaine Roger's sacrifice fly to right field scored Smith and Shaw took a 1-0 lead.   After Mount Olive ’s first two batters were retired in the bottom of the inning, Craig Hurba reached on an error and the floodgates opened as Shaw committed five errors and two passed balls in the inning. With Sam Martin on first and Matt Johnson on second, Nichols homered over the fence in right-centerfield to give the Trojans a 7-0 lead. 

Mount Olive (10-4) starter Ryan Barham allowed only two more hits and one more walk over the next four innings.  Blake Montgomery and Jason Sharp combined to pitch four shutout innings, allowing only one hit.

Mount Olive struck for two more runs in the bottom of the sixth on Shawn Warner’s  two-run double and added its final run in the eighth on a wild pitch.

Shaw starter LaPrince Radcliffe (0-1) allowed only three more hits over the next six innings. All of the runs he allowed were unearned.
