Shaw defeats Bowie State at the Buzzer
Raleigh, NC
Senior guard Melvin Smith (6’3, 190-JR-G/Roanoke, VA) hit a 40-foot shot at the buzzer to give the Shaw University Bears a 64-61 win over CIAA Eastern Division power Bowie State University Bulldogs.  The win snapped a five game losing streak for the Bears and improved their record to 1-1 in the CIAA East and 2-11 overall, while the Bulldogs dropped to 1-1 and 12-5.

In a game that saw the Bulldogs shoot 46% (14-30) in the first half, it was the Bears who were able to keep it close and only trailed by two 35-37 after the first 20 minutes.  The Bulldogs biggest lead was 11 which came in the opening period (35-24) with 3:50 left, but the Bears went on a 10-2 run to close out the half.

There were eight lead changes and the score was tied nine times, but it was the defensive effort by the Bears in the second half that saw the Bulldogs shoot only 36% (9-25) from the floor.

Leading the Bears was senior forward Daniel Jackson (6’6, 210-SR/Lake Wales , FL) who finished with a double-double 23 points and 10 rebounds.  Melvin Smith also finished with 18 points.

Pacing the Bulldogs was Derick Payne (6’6, 220-SR-G/Washington, DC) who led all scorers with 26 points.  Also in double digits were Thomas Hawkins (6’4, 210-SR-G/Annapolis, MD) and Brent Campbell (6’0,160-SR-G/Ft. Washington, MD) who finished with 17 and 11 points respectively.

Catawba Nips SU
Hickory, NC
In the second outing of the Lenoir-Rhyne/Moretz Men’s Basketball Classic, Catawba College held on for a 75-73 win over the Shaw University Bears.

It was the Bears second consecutive outing that went down to the wire and it was Jason Coleman (Raleigh, NC) who missed the front end of a one and one that closed the door with three ticks left in the game.  Daniel Jackson (Lake Wales, FL) hit a jumper with 46 seconds left that put the Bears in striking distance (75-73).  After a Catawba miss shot with 15 seconds left, Coleman was fouled setting up the free throws for the tie.

SU’s Nate Aaron (Jacksonville, FL) led all scorers with 23 points, which was his best outing of the season.  Daniel Jackson with a season high 20 points and All-CIAA James Rosebud finished with a double-double, 13 points and 13 rebounds.

Leading Catawba was Jamel Hamilton and Brian Graves, who finished with 13 and 10 points respectively.

The setback dropped the Bears to 1-9 on the season, while Catawba improved to 12-3.

The Bears will return to action on January 10 in their first CIAA contest of the year at Elizabeth City State.

Shaw Bears Fall to LRC Bears
Hickory , NC
It was a Bear brawl that saw eight lead changes and nine ties, but it was the Lenoir-Rhyne College Bears that came out on top over the Shaw University Bears 59-51 in the Moretz Sports Men’s Basketball Classic.  LR improved to 4-6 and SU dropped to 1-8 on the season.

It was a nip and tuck battle that saw the home standing Lenoir-Rhyne Bears pull away in the final 15 seconds with clutch shooting from the free throw line.  Leading 53-51 with 15 seconds remaining, LR outscored SU 6-0 to secure the win.  SU was hurt at the free-throw line (19 of 31, 66%) and missed several key shots down the stretch.  SU only made six of 25 shoots from the floor (24%), which also played a major part in the outcome.

SU had three players score in double figures, led by James Rosebud (St. Petersburg , FL ) 11 points, while Daniel Jackson ( Lake Wales , FL) added a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds.  Jamal Coleman ( Raleigh, NC ) also finished with 10 points.

LR was led by Reggie Bratton ( Charlotte, NC ) who led all scorers with 18 points and 12 rebounds.

On the final day of the classic Friday, Shaw will take on Catawba at 2 p.m. and Lenoir-Rhyne will take on Virginia State at 4 p.m. Virginia State upset Catawba 84-79 in the first game of the Classic.

Bears Fall to Rams in Non-Conference Match-up
WINSTON-SALEM, NC – It may not have been the most aesthetically pleasing basketball game that Winston-Salem State University has ever played, yet it did result in an all-important 71-63 win for the Rams on Wednesday evening at the C.E. Gaines Center as they handed Shaw University their seventh loss of the season in non-conference basketball action.

The Rams led for 38:54 of a possible 40:00 in the game as they trailed only during the game’s first 1:06 of play.

A James Rosebud lay-up gave the visiting Bears their only lead of the contest, at 2-0, 36 seconds into the game before a Jamal Durham four-footer tied the game and a Curtis Hines three-pointer only 11 seconds later put the Rams ahead for good.

WSSU used a 15-of-30 shooting performance during the contest’s first 20 minutes of play, including a seven-of-13 shooting display from three-point range to open up a 17-point halftime lead as they raced ahead of the Bears 42-25 after the first period.

The second half would prove to be a closer contest between the two teams as several WSSU offensive miscues and eight Ram turnovers helped Shaw to cut the lead to as little as three points with 39 seconds remaining.

What once was a lead of 19 points (with 9:55 to play in the second half) became a cushion that could be erased with only one possession with under a minute remaining in the game.

However, the stoic Rams were impervious to the Bears’ final charge as five successful free-throws in six attempts over the course of the game’s final 30 seconds of play sealed the win for WSSU.

Leading the way for WSSU was Alleggrie Guinn who tallied 19 points, four rebounds and three assists in 28 minutes of work as he led four WSSU players into double figures.  Turning in another stellar performance was Ram point guard Roy Peake who chipped in four points, six rebounds, 11 assists and two steals while committing only a lone turnover in a game-high 32 minutes of play.  Jamal Coleman led Shaw with 20 points on six-for-13 shooting in the losing effort.

WSSU improves to 5-4 overall with the win (0-1 CIAA) while Shaw falls to 1-7 on the season.
