May 19th & 20th. All of the athletic personnel from the CIAA
institutions were in attendance to recap the past

Academically, Kim was named to the 2007-08 President's List; won
2008 CIAA All-Academic Honors; won the 2008 Shaw Volleyball and
Women's Tennis Award of Academic Excellence, the 2008
President's Award of Academic Excellence and the 2007-08
Athletic Academic All-star Award.
The co-recipient of the
prestigious award was the eastern division's Celeste Trahan of
Elizabeth City State University. Shaw extends congratulations to
both student-athletes.
The CIAA

Alexandre Lord-Andrade,
Men's Tennis Shaw
Lord-Andrade is a junior, Business Administration major with
a 3.63 GPA. He was named as the 2008 Men's Tennis Player of
the Year; made the All-Conference and All-Tournament teams
and was also named as the Men's Tournament MVP.
Alexandre was placed on the Dean's List for 2007-2008 and
received the 2008 Shaw Men's Tennis Award of Academic
Excellence. He most recently was recognized with 2008 CIAA
All-Academic Honors and the 2007-08 Shaw Athletic Academic
All-star Award.
The CIAA Scholar Athlete of the Year is an honor awarded
to the top athlete in the conference that has excelled
both athletically and academically. Shaw extends
congratulations to Alexandre Lord-Andrade.

On the women’s side, the 4 x 100 meters
Relay Team finished 83rd out of 85 teams with a time
of 52.46 and the 4 x 200 meters Relay Team finished in the final
spot at 46th with a time of 1:50.44. Furthermore, the
4 x 400 meters Relay Team finished 79th out of 83rd
with a time of 4:08.24 and the Sprint Medley Team finished in
the final spot at 40th with a time of 4:30.31. In the
event of shot put, senior
Persis Brown (Spring Lake, NC / Social Work) finished
29th out of 75 competitors with a distance of 35 – 11
¼ . All-CIAA, Brown is the first individual participant in
school history!
On the men’s side, the 4 x 100 meters
Relay Team finished 67th out of 80 teams with a time
of 43.67 as the 4 x 200 meters Relay Team was unable to finish
due to the drop of their baton. Furthermore, the Sprint Medley
Team finished 40th out of 50 teams with a time of
3:41.18. Making school history was made as the 4 x 400 meters
Relay Team finished with a time of
3:24.82; the institution’s first ever track and field bronze

Shaw University has been announced as the
Men’s Tennis Coach of the
Year. Coach
Enitan led the CIAA powerful Bears to the Men’s conference title
this season and continued play in the NCAA Division II Men’s
Tennis Post-Season. This is his 4th Back to Back Championship
in the Men's field. The Shaw Bears finished the regular season
as an undefeated squad in conference play 4-0, 9-0, 11-5.
Congratulations are extended to
Coach Enitan from the entire Shaw University Family for his
continued and remarkable excellence!
At the conclusion
of competition, gatherers filed into the middle
fenced in court for the championship
announcements and presentations. After all the
men’s runners ups and champions for doubles and
singles were presented with plaques, Shaw’s
Alexandra Lord-Andrade was honored with a
thunderous ovation as he was named 2008 CIAA
Men’s Tennis Championship Most Valuable Player.

two-day meeting concluded with the annual CIAA Coach of the Year
Luncheon. Shaw University took three very prestigious awards
that were presented to the well deserving recipients. Coach
Sunday Enitan received the Men's Tennis Coach of the Year
following an exceptional year and post-season play in Savannah,
GA. Two of the outstanding student-athletes from the
Men & Women's Tennis Teams won the top Scholar Athletes
of the Year Awards. Kim Moore and Alexandre Lord-Andrade

19, 2008 – Petersburg, VA – In the
final day of singles competition, all six of
Shaw University’s number one seeds emerged as
their respective singles competition champions.
Shaw served for a sum of 63 team points to claim
their fourth consecutive championship crown. The
feat completes their sweep of singles and
doubles championships. The title of runner-up
was designated to Johnson C. Smith University
for their accumulation of 51 points. In third
place was host Virginia State University with 47
points as Virginia Union University finished in
fourth place with 35 points. St. Augustine’s
College totaled 26 points to take fifth place
and St. Paul’s College stood at the sixth place
position with 15 points.

Petersburg, VA – At the end of the
singles championship competitions, it was
annouced that Shaw University's
Women's Tennis team placed third
with a total of 50 points in the 2008 CIAA
Championships. However, CIAA Rookie of the
Year and the Lady Bear's No. 1 seed
Livia Oliveira defeated
Fayettevielle State University's No. 1 seed
Ines Nieves. The freshman sensation defeated
her western division foe in three sets 6 -
7, 6 - 4, 6 - 2. Her prominent perserverance
and phemononal play awarded Oliveira to be
named the 2008 CIAA Championship
Most Valuable Player.

SIX NO. ONE SEEDS AS JCSU, VSU SPLIT NO. TWO SEEDS FOR CIAA SINGLES CHAMPIONSHIPS
April 18, 2008 – Petersburg, VA –Day two of the Men’s
Tennis CIAA Championships showcased just how defined the “will to
win” attitude of each competing student-athlete was. Semifinals
competition concluded with Western Division Champions, Shaw
University, safely securing all No. 1 seeds in each of the six
singles competitions. Whereas, Johnson C. Smith University and host
Virginia State University each split the No. 2 seeds at three each.

Two Women's Singles Results
Petersburg, VA - The finals match-ups
are set in the women's singles competition for the 2008 CIAA Tennis
Championships. Five student-athletes from Fayetteville State and
Virginia State advanced to the championship match on Thursday
afternoon from the tennis complex at Virginia State University.
CIAA Women's Player of the Year Ines Nieves (FSU) will face
second-seed Livia Oliveira (Shaw) in the finals at the number one
singles position. Nieves defeated Imani James of Virginia State in
two sets 6-3; 6-4 in the semifinals and Oliveira topped Jennifer Lee
of Johnson C. Smith 6-3; 6-2 to set the stage for the championship.
All-conference selections Donna Johnson (VSU) and Constance Lee
(FSU) will square-off for the title at the number two singles
position. Johnson defeated fourth-seed Jae Hargett (JCSU) 7-5; 6-0
and Lee beat the third-seed Juanique Thompson of Shaw University in
two sets 6-2; 6-2.
Nine of the twelve student-athletes that have advance to the
championship match were all-conference selections this year.
The championship matches will begin on Saturday morning on the
campus of Virginia State University.
SOFTBALL OUSTED BY JOHNSON C. SMITH
April 18, 2008 – Petersburg, VA – The Shaw
University Softball team laced up their cleats to wage war
against the western division champions, the Johnson C. Smith
University Lady Golden Bulls. The Lady Bears caused a shortage in
their opponents averaged runs scored with a strong defensive stand.
However, JCSU dealt Shaw their final defeat 7 – 2.
Congratulations to Coach Laura Aker and the Shaw University Softball team for an outstanding level and commitment and effort throughout the season.
SOFTBALL STAYS ALIVE WITH GAME TWO TRIUMPH
April 17, 2008 – Petersburg, VA – The Shaw University
Softball team took on the Lady Bulldogs of Bowie State University in
game one. The Lady Bears were defeated by Bowie State 10 – 2. In
game two, the Lady Bears turned up their defensive effort and
increased their offense to evict the Virginia Union University Lady
Panthers out of the double elimination competition. Shaw advances
with 16 - 6 defeat of VUU.
BASEBALL OUT OF CIAA CHAMPIONSHIP
April 17, 2008 – Petersburg, VA – The Shaw
University Baseball team’s efforts to make it to championship
circle were sadly dashed in their double elimination competition. In
game one, the Bears were defeated by Elizabeth City 17 – 9. The
Vikings attacked Shaw for four runs in the first inning and then
followed a few innings later with three-homeruns. The Bears rallied
back in the fourth and seventh inning for a total of seven runs.
However, ECSU’s Nick Johnson struck for second homerun and was
credited with three RBIs to stamp Shaw’s defeat. In game two, the
Bears went the distance with their cross-town rivals, the St.
Augustine’s College Falcons, as the game elapsed into 11 innings.
Nevertheless, the Bears were downed 17 – 9 to punch their ticket out
of championship competition.
Congratulations to Coach Bobby Sanders and Shaw University Bears Baseball as they finished with the best conference record, were named the CIAA Regular Season Champions, had one player named Player of the Year, and nine players total on the All-CIAA teams.
WOMEN'S SINGLES COMPETITION BEGINS
AT THE 2008 CIAA TENNIS CHAMPIONSHIPS
Ettrick, VA - The women's
singles competition got underway for the 2008 CIAA Tennis
Championships on Thursday morning from the tennis complex on the
campus of Virginia State University.
At the number one singles position, CIAA Women's Player of the Year
and first-seed Ines Nieves of Fayetteville State University advanced
to the semifinal round by defeating eighth-seed Farrah Sells of
Saint Paul's College in two sets 6-1; 6-1. Nieves will face Imani
James of Virginia State University in the semifinals. James earned
her spot in the next round by beating Tamisha Hurley of Livingstone
College, 6-3; 6-4.
Three of four top ranked players moved on to the semifinals at the
number three position.
Virginia State and Fayetteville State had all their players advance
to the semifinals in each of the six singles positions.
ALL-CIAA MEN’S TENNIS TEAM ANNOUNCED

All-CIAA Men’s Tennis Team. Of those stellar student-athletes
selected, Shaw had all six members drafted to the all star roster.

Earning distinction for Shaw was junior Kim Moore (5 – 9 / Bayshore, NY / International Relations) (pictured top left) and freshman Livia Oliveira (5 – 8 / Sao Paulo, Brazil / Business Administration) (pictured top right). Moore played #4 singles and #2 doubles as Oliveira played both #1 singles and doubles. Furthermore, Oliveira was honored as the 2008 Rookie of the Year!

April 16, 2008 – Petersburg, VA – Faithful fans
flocked to the fences of the tennis courts for day one of the 2008
CIAA Men’s Championships. Shaw University secured first place
finishes in each of the three doubles event to total 21 points and
swept the doubles championships. Shaw was the #1 seed entering each
doubles competition.
The Bears held a four-point lead over second place Johnson C. Smith University. The Golden Bulls 17 points were just one point more than third place host Virginia State University with 16 points. Also parted by a one point differential was fourth place Virginia Union University with 11 points and fifth place Saint Augustine’s with 10 points. Sixth place St. Paul's was held scoreless.

AT CIAA CHAMPIONSHIPS IN WOMEN'S DOUBLES
Ettrick, VA - Shaw University
finishes in first at the number one doubles position, while Virginia
State University is atop of the number two and three doubles
position in women's tennis action from the 2008 CIAA Women's Tennis
Championship at the tennis complex on the campus of Virginia State
University on Wednesday afternoon.
The Lady Bears of Shaw University went through the gauntlet at the
number one doubles position to earn the championship. First seed
Livia Oliveira and Juanique Thompson (Shaw) defeated third seed Ines
Nieves and LeJacquelyn Artis of Fayetteville State University 8-2 to
be crowned champions. Oliveira and Thompson surpassed Alicia Brown
and Farrah Sells of Saint Paul's College 8-2 in the opening round;
then Jennifer Lee and Brittany Laws from Johnson C. Smith University
8-1 before earning the victory in the championship match.
Host Virginia State University snatched the championship at the
number two and three double position. Asya Monds and Kendra Plummer
(VSU) proved they were worthy of their number one seed by defeating
Tameka Scott and Rebecca Edmonds of Saint Paul's College 8-0; then
Melissa Shuler and Jae Hargett of Johnson C. Smith University 8-1,
en route to the championship match with Constance Lee and Tyima
Johnson of Fayetteville State University. The Lady Trojans won the
number two doubles title by a score of 8-4 over the Lady Broncos.
Due to the lack of participants at the number three doubles
position, first seed Tamilia Hicks and Keisha Holmes (VSU) received
a bye in the opening round. Hicks and Holmes went on to defeat
Marina Palma and Jasmine McNair of Bowie State University 8-2 before
moving on to the championship against Samantha Meeks and Chekimbrell
Jefferson of Fayetteville State University. The Lady Trojans duo
beat Meeks and Jefferson 8-0 to win the number three doubles
position crown.

SWEEPS ST. AUGUSTINE'S
IN SUNDAY SHOWDOWN

April 13, 2008 – Cary, NC – The Shaw University Baseball team swept up back to back victories against Saint Augustine's College in their Sunday showdown. Shaw won game one 14 - 5 and followed with an 8 - 2 win in game two. The wins credited the Bears with an unblemished 4 - 0 series record against the rival Falcons this season. Baseball's record now stands at 28 - 8 Overall and 13 - 3 CIAA. Shaw's premier season performance has them in a strong running to clinch the title as CIAA Regular Season Champions and possibly advance to the CIAA Championship Tournament as the #1 team.
The Baseball team will travel to Petersburg, Virginia to compete for the CIAA Championship held Thursday, April 17th through Sunday, April 20th.

Softball team played with shutdown defense as they
played the final two innings of their March 15th

Lady Panthers. Shaw secured the game two with a 15
– 6 triumph.
On Tuesday (April 13th) the Softball team will host its final season contest against the Virginia State University Lady Trojans. The doubleheader showdown will be held at Walnut Creek Softball Complex at 2:00 p.m.

– Shaw University is highly respected for its top-notch talented
student-athletes. Furthermore, it is a known fact that the
University quite often has its own products to evolve as premier
professionals in the coaching industry. Well, Head Volleyball and
Softball Coach Laura Aker fit both descriptions perfectly.
Recently, the fourth year head coach was one of 25 coaches granted acceptance to the Women’s Coaches Academy. The picked portion was plucked from a field of over 500 applicants. The apple did not fall too far from the tree as, Shaw alumnae and former volleyball and softball coach Dianthia Ford-Kee, was largely responsible for recruiting and passing the torch of coaching to Aker. Ford-Kee stated, “As the Senior Woman Administrator, I am always looking for opportunities for staff members to enhance their professional skills in their particular area. I am proud to know that the NCAA Women’s Coaches Academy selected Coach Aker for this great opportunity and experience.”
Aker will travel to Atlanta, Georgia to take part in the exciting opportunity from June 7 – June 11.

team split their doubleheader against the Elizabeth City State
University Vikings. The Bears picked up a 7 – 3 win in the initial
game, but unfortunately were two scores shy of success in game two
as ECSU won 8 – 7.
On Sunday (April 13th) the Baseball team will travel to Cary, NC to take on their next door neighbors, the Saint Augustine’s College Falcons. The rivals will reunite for a doubleheader at the USSA Baseball Complex at 1:00 p.m.

game one and 14 – 10 in game two.
On Sunday (April 13th) the Softball team will resume play
against Virginia Union University. The competition will begin in the
top of the fourth inning as the previously scheduled match-up on
March 15th was postponed due to inclement weather. Prior
to the postponement, Shaw led 15 – 5. The game will be held at
Walnut Creek Softball Complex at 12:00 Noon.

The Lady Bears will prepare to
