Shaw Beats Elizabeth City State
Raleigh – The streak is over.
Shaw quarterback Jermonty Kimbrough
accounted for 449 yards of Shaw's 459 yards of total offense as the
Shaw football team snapped a three-game losing streak by defeating the Vikings
of Elizabeth City 41-17 before a crowd of 2,221 at John Baker Stadium.
Shaw (5-3, 3-3) scored first as they moved
the ball 48 yards on eight plays and scored on a one-yard run by Jermonty
Kimbrough with the first quarter putting the Bears up 7-0. The Vikings scored
in the second quarter ending a 12-play 35-yard drive with a 36-yard field goal
by Kenneth Milhayov to cut the lead to 7-3. Shaw would answer back late in the
second quarter on a 30-yard pass from Kimbrough to Damon Harrison to cap of a
six-play 75-yard drive going up 14-3. The Vikings would score again just
before halftime on a 27-yard pass to Teyon Pender from Daniel Herlihy cutting
their deficit to 14-10 at halftime.
In the second half, the Vikings (1-7, 1-5)
were the first to strike on a 22-yard pass to Carlos Smith from Herlihy to give
the Viking their first lead of the game 17-14 with 10:20 left in the third
quarter. On the ensuing kickoff it looked as if the Bears would score as they
had the ball first and goal from the one after Torrance Nunnally returned the
kickoff 61 yards to the Viking 35. Kimbrough completed passes to Charles
Leonard for 12 yards and Mark Bransom (eight catches 166 yards) for 17 and the
Bears had it first and goal from the Viking six. The Bears failed to
score and the Vikings took over.
Nunnally would make his presence felt again
as on the Vikings next possession, they were forced to punt. Nunnally ran
Kevin Dodson's punt back 63 yards for what looked like a touchdown but was
called out at the one-yard line. Kimbrough ran right behind Robert Rhodes
for the one-yard plunge and the Bears took the lead for good 20-17 after the
missed extra-point. After the team's traded possessions, the Vikings were
driving when Khaleel Sutherland intercepted his first of two passes and ran it
back 12 yards into Viking territory. Two plays later, Kimbrough found
Bransom for a 20-yard touchdown and the Bears extended the lead to 27-17.
Kimbrough had his best game of his career
completing 21-40 passes for 379 yards and four touchdowns with no
interceptions. He also carried the ball 14 times for 70 yards and two
touchdowns.
The Bears will play Virginia State on
homecoming next Saturday at Garner Senior High. Kick-off will be at 2:00pm.

Bears Lose Third Straight
RICHMOND
- It was one
of those days.
Not too much went right for the Shaw football team as they fell to Virginia
Union 26-6 at Hovey Field. Shaw managed 281 yards of total offense, most
of that coming after the game was out of reach. Virginia Union freshman
John Cates did most of the damage for Virginia Union racking up more total
offense than Shaw, 282 yards, as the Panthers totaled 310 yards.
Virginia
Union (4-3, 3-1) scored on its first possession of the game, putting together an
eight-play 52-yard drive that resulted in a Cates to Tremayne Hill 20-yard
touchdown pass-and-catch and the Panthers led early 7-0. Shaw (4-3, 2-3)
could get nothing going on offense keeping the ball for 6:02 on its first
drive, which resulted in a punt after 11 plays and 41 yards. On their
last possession of the quarter, Jermonty Kimbrough's pass was intercepted by
Ryan Williams and Virginia Union took over at the Shaw 46 late in the first
quarter. On the first play in the second quarter, Cates found Jerome
Leslie for a 19-yard touchdown and a 14-0 Panther lead. On its next five
possessions, the Bears punted three times, turned the ball over on downs and
the half ended. On its last possession of the first half, the Bears had a
chance to score. They started the drive starting from their own 16 with 38
seconds remaining. On this drive Kimbrough started out completing 3-of-4
passes, for 54 yards. On his last completion to Kendall Nunn, a
30-yarder, Virginia Union was called for roughing the passer with no time
remaining on the clock and Shaw had one more chance to score first and 10 on
the Panther 15. Kimbrough's pass to Damon Harrison went incomplete at the
five as Brandon White made a jarring hit to dislodge Harrison from the ball and
the Panthers held a 17-0 halftime lead.
Shaw
received the ball to open the second half, but went three-and-out.
Virginia Union went four plays, 68 yards in 2:33 as Cates found Leslie again
this time for a 19-yard touchdown and Virginia Union took a commanding 26-0
lead early in the third quarter.
The
Shaw defense would not yield anymore points and was able to contain Cates from
that point on, but the offense could not get it going. Shaw would get
into Panther territory three times, once at the 26 and then at the 5 and
finally at the 37, but fumbled twice and turned the ball over on downs.
Shaw scored with 1:13 remaining in the game as Kimbrough found Kendall Nunn for
a 10-yard touchdown.
Omer
Wilson led the Bears with nine tackles (seven solo), three for loss.

Bears Hang Tough With Bowie State
BOWIE, MD - Two-straight losses.
The last time the Bears experienced that
was during the 1978 season. But before a homecoming crowd of 4,852 screaming
fans at Bulldog Stadium, Shaw would come up short by one point falling 14-13 to
the Bulldogs.
The Bears (4-2, 2-2) dominated the game in most
statistical categories including having 125 more total offensive yards than the
Bulldogs. The Bears had five more first downs, 17 more offensive plays, and
held the ball on offense almost four minutes longer than the Bulldogs. It was
one category that the Bears didn't want to lead in and that was penalties. The
Bears had nine penalties for 112 yards, over 50 yards more than the Bulldogs.
It was the Bulldogs (5-2, 4-0) who would strike
first on a 38- yard pass from Lamar Mangio to Bakari Brown at the 9:54
mark of the first quarter. The teams would alternate possession of the football
seven times including three fumbles, two by Shaw and one by Bowie State to end the
first quarter.
In the Second quarter, Bowie controlled
the ball for over half of the period. The Bears got as close as the 16 yard
line on two occasions and failed to convert. The Bulldogs went to the half with
a 7-0 lead.
The Bears opened up the second half with
an 11- play 79- yard drive, capped off with a four- yard pass from Jermonty
Kimbrough (14-22-182 yards and 2 TD's) to Mark Bransom to put the Bears on the
board. The Chester Charles extra-point made the score 7-7 at the 9:37 mark of the third
quarter. The Bears began to take control as they forced Bowie State to punt
the ball away on each of its next three possessions, then scored at the 9:30
mark of the fourth quarter on a 43- yard Kimbrough to Damon Harrison touchdown
pass.
The point after would be blocked giving the Bears a 13-7 lead. The Bulldogs
would not lay down as they took nine plays to march 70 yards and find the
end-zone on a 11- yard pass from Manigo to Al-Jay Vernon. The extra-point was
good and the Bulldogs would
take a one- point lead with five minutes left in the game and never look
back.
Bryon Cary led Shaw in rushing with
24 carries for 70 yards, followed by Kimbrough with 7 carries for 77 yards.
David Coleman was the leader on defense as he finished the game with nine
tackles (four solo), two sacks, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery.
The Bears will take the field again this
Saturday as they continue with divisional play when they travel to Richmond to
take on Virginia Union at 2:00 p.m.

Bears Fall Short Against Broncos
FAYETTEVILLE – The 4-0 start is now 4-1.
Shaw gave up 21 first half points to
Fayetteville State and fell 28-21 before a crowd of 3,325 at Jeralds Stadium.
The Broncos have won the last six meetings.
Shaw’s ground game was in its regular
CIAA leading mode at the beginning of the game.
Byron Cary (23 carries, 41
yards) rushed for 31 yards on four carries on the Bears first drive and scored
on a two-yard run to give the Bears a 7-0 lead.
On the ensuing possession, the Broncos did some running of their own
picking up 38 yards on the ground on an eight-play, 70-yard drive that took
3:54 and culminated in a Duane Taylor to Shaw Timberlake five-yard touchdown
pass-and-catch, tying the game at 7-7.
The Bears (4-1, 2-1) began to open up the
passing game as, quarterback Jermonty Kimbrough (20-48-2-290-2) found
Fayetteville native Mark Bransom for catches of six and 28 yards.
A roughing the passing penalty against Fayetteville State gave Shaw a
first and 10 from the Bronco 14. Cary
rushed for one yard on first down, and then lost two yards on second down.
Cary rushed again on third and 11 and lost five yards.
On fourth and 16 Kimbrough and Bransom hooked up again, this time over
the middle in the end zone for a 20-yard touchdown.
The extra-point was missed but Shaw held a 13-7 lead.
That would be all the scoring the Bears
would muster in the first half. Fayetteville
State (3-2, 1-1) would score after a Shaw interception as Taylor found Daryl
Bright running in the back of the endzone for a 16-yard touchdown.
The extra-point was converted and the Broncos led 14-13.
Both teams punted on their next
possessions. Shaw took over first
and 10 from its own 44 following the Bronco punt.
Cary rushed for nine, then seven yards.
Kimbrough then found Bransom for nine yards.
Reginald Price (8 carries, 22 yards) rushed for seven yards and another
Shaw first down. The Bears offense
then became stagnant as three-straight plays netted 0 yards.
On fourth and 10 from the Bronco 30, Kimbrough again found Bransom for
what appeared to be a 30-yard back of the endzone one-foot-in-bounds touchdown
catch. But after conferring, the
officials decided that it was not a touchdown and Fayetteville State took over
on downs. On the Broncos ensuing
possession, Torrance Nunnally intercepted a pass returning it 39 yards to the
Fayetteville State 14. The Bears
at this point began to find the going tough running the football as
two-straight Cary rushes netted –7 yards.
On fourth down, Kimbrough’s pass was intercepted in the endzone by
Walt Williams, who returned it 42 yards. The
Broncos ran the two-minute drill to perfection going on a 10-play 58-yard drive
in 1:18 as Amir Holding’s four-yard touchdown run gave the Broncos a 21-13
halftime lead.
The Bears could not get anything going in
the second half, fumbling on its first possession.
The Broncos capitalized as Taylor found Marques Newman for a five-yard
touchdown catch and the Broncos led 28-13.
With their offense sputtering, Shaw began
to play more of a field position game. Instead
of going for it on fourth down in Bronco territory, William Sanders punted
two-straight times and the ball was downed at the Bronco nine and five yard
lines, respectively. On its next
two possessions, Shaw went for it on fourth down.
On the first possession on fourth and one from the Bronco 33 a
quarterback sneak was called to no avail.
On fourth and 10 from the Bronco 25, Kimbrough was sacked for an 11-yard
loss.
As the game looked all but over for the
Bears, they started their next-to-last-drive from their own 16 with 1:45
remaining. Kimbrough found Damon
Harrison (6 receptions, 90 yards) for 18 yards.
He then found Brasnom for 21 yards, 19 yards and 18 yards to the
Fayetteville State 13. On third and 10 Kimbrough found Cary for a 13-yard touchdown
pass. Shaw went for two and
Kimbrough avoided a heavy Bronco rush and found Harrison for the two pints and
the Bears trailed 28-21. Shaw
recovered the on-side kick and started first and 10 from its own 47 with 34
seconds remaining. Kimbrough tried
a deep pass to Bransom that went incomplete.
He then looked deep for Shawn Woodard, who was able to get his hands on
the ball but Dentyl Jackson knocked it away.
On fourth and 15 Kimbrough found Cary for 19 yards as he got out of
bounds with three seconds remaining. Kimbrough’s
last second pass to Kenneth Robinson was incomplete with no time remaining on
the clock.
The Bears gained 382 yards of total yards
to Fayetteville State’s 328. Khaleel
Sutherland led the Bears with 14 tackles (nine solo).
Shaw will travel to Maryland to face
eastern division opponent Bowie State next Saturday at 1:30 p.m.

Bears in the Community
Members of the Shaw football team visited two daycare centers in
Raleigh last Wednesday. The
players visited Raleigh Nursery School, Inc., located right
across the street from where the Bears practice in Chavis Park
and Infants Palace Childcare Center.
“We ask a lot of the
community so it’s about the ball players giving back,” said
Shaw offensive line coach Edwin Bailey, who implemented the
program. “Those
guys spending time with the kids, means a lot to the kids and
our players. Some
of the kids don’t have male role models.
It’s all about giving back to the community.”
Brenda High-Sanders,
executive director of the Raleigh Nursery School was thrilled to
have the Bears there.
“We are glad to see
positive minority role models wanting to interact with young
children,” said High-Sanders, whose daycare is for ages 12
months to 12 years. “Children
need to see there is a side other than on the football field. The players will impress upon the children that you must be
in school to participate in football.
It’s good for them to see you can grow up, go to school
and still do fun things such as football.
It’s also good to see the University involved in the
community.”
Shaw will visit the two
daycares every Wednesday throughout the course of the season.

four possessions, Shaw (3-0, 2-0) engineered a 10-play 77-yard
scoring drive that took 5:19. Price was the workhorse on
the drive gaining 32 yards, but Cary received the glory scoring
from two yards out and Shaw held a 6-3 lead.
On
the Falcons next two possession, they were forced to punt by a
Bear defense that begin to settle down, then Shawn Woodard
intercepted a Duane Smith pass and the Bears began first and 10
from their own three. On the first play Cary rushed for no
gain. On the next play Jermonty Kimbrough went back to
pass and was sacked by Tim Moffett in the endzone for a safety
and the Shaw lead was cut to 6-5 going into halftime.
There
was no scoring in the third quarter as Shaw missed on numerous
long pass opportunities, but the Bears defense held. With
the Falcons driving late in the quarter and the ball on the Bear
six, Bear linebacker Christopher Peavy forced Trvious Carter to
fumble and Peavy recovered thwarting the Falcon drive.
In
the fourth quarter the Bears put together another impressive
scoring drive going 11 plays and 64 yards, the key play being a
Cary 50-yard run. Cary capped the drive off scoring from
three yards out giving the Bears a 12-5 lead. Shaw would
score on its next drive as Kimbrough found Mark Bransom for his
only catch of the game a five-yard touchdown pass and catch and
a 19-5 lead.
Khaleel
Sutherland Torrance Nunnally two tackles for loss) and Peavy
(three tackles for loss) each had six tackles for the
Bears. The Bears racked up 335 yards of total offense to
St. Augustine's 253.
The
Bears will face Edward Waters in the Willie E. Gary Classic next
week at 5:00 p.m. at AllTel Stadium.

Nothing Surprising About Shaw's Start
The Shaw football team is off to a 2-0
start, its best start in 32 years. The success that the
Bears have had thus far seems to be somewhat shocking to those
not associated with Shaw football last year, but not to those
who saw this team play last season.
Head coach Deondri Clark,
along with his excellent coaching staff, consisting of Edwin
Bailey (offensive line), Buddy Crutchfield (acting defensive
coordinator), Jimmie Johnson (offensive coordinator), Tony High
(linebackers), Wayne McLean (assistant head coach/running backs)
and Calvin Oxendine (defensive line), have done an outstanding
job, mixing the outstanding talent from last year's team in with
the talented newcomers. Taking Bears with names like
Campbell, Nunnally, Lewis, Kimbrough, Bransom, Woodard and
mixing them with names like Safford, Cary, Mercer and Rhodes has
obviously paid off well for Shaw.
Even though the Bears
played a club schedule last season, they are currently on pace
to surpass a lot of statistics they had last year. For
instance, last year's team averaged 119.0 yards per game.
This year's team 268.0. Last year's team averaged 127.0
yards passing per game. This year's team 191.0. The
defense excelled last year and gave up 21.5 points per
game. This year's team 17.0. The Bears lead the CIAA
in scoring offense (39.0), rushing offense (268.0), passing
offense (191.0), total offense (459.0), first downs (40) and
opponents are only converting 17.4 percent of their first downs
against Shaw's defense, which also leads the league. Shaw
players have been named CIAA Player of the Week at their
respective position five times, including center Robert Rhodes,
who has been named Offensive Lineman of the Week in successive
weeks. Clark was named Coach of the Week this week.
No surprise there.

Johnson to be Inducted into Howard Hall of Fame
Shaw offensive coordinator Jimmie
Johnson will be inducted into the Howard University Hall of Fame
at a ceremony on Friday September 12 in Washington, DC.
Johnson, a 1989 graduate
of Howard with a BS in consumer studies with a double minor in
marketing and business management, was selected All-MEAC during
his senior year at Howard. He finished his college career
with 74 receptions for 1,229 yards and 16 TD’s.
After his collegiate days, Johnson was drafted by the Washington
Redskins in the 12th round (316 overall) and played 10 seasons
in the NFL, with the Redskins, Detroit Lions, Kansas City Chiefs
and Philadelphia Eagles. He was a member of Washington's
1991 Super Bowl Championship team.
Johnson was Shaw's wide
receivers/tight ends coach last season. Prior to coming to
Shaw, Johnson was the running backs coach
at South Carolina State.

Rhodes heads list of Players of the Week
For the second-straight week Shaw
center Robert Rhodes was named CIAA Offensive Lineman of the
Week, heading the list of Shaw football personnel to be named
CIAA Players of the Week. Shawn Woodard was named
Defensive Back of the Week; Aaron Woodard was named Rookie of
the Week and Shaw head coach Deondri Clark was named Coach of
the Week.
Rhodes, a 6-3, 320, junior
from Los Angeles, helped the Bears to 359 yards of total offense
in the Bears 34-0 beating of Johnson C. Smith, Saturday.
In his first game of the season, corner back Shawn Woodard (6-0,
180, So., Rock Hill, SC) intercepted two passes, running one
back 53 yards for a touchdown, defended three passes and had two
solo tackles. Aaron Woodard, a 6-0, 220, freshman from
Lake Charles, LA recorded seven tackles and three quarterback
sacks in the victory. Clark was named Coach of the Week
leading the Bears to their first shutout of an opponent since
1975 and their best start since 1971.

Bears Blank Golden Bulls
CHARLOTTE – Shaw is on a roll.
After 559 yards of total
offense last week, the Bear football team racked up 359 yards of
total offense on its way to a 34-0 shut out of Johnson C. Smith
before a crowd of 4,265 at Irwin Belk Stadium.
For Shaw it was the first shutout since 1975.
Unlike the game against
Livingstone, Shaw (2-0, 1-0) went three-and-out on its first
series. On the
Golden Bulls’ first play from scrimmage, quarterback Donja
Gooding’s pass was intercepted by Shawn Woodard, one of his
two interceptions and he took it back 53 yards for a touchdown.
Shaw missed the extra point but led 6-0.
Byron Cary, who rushed for 215 yards and three touchdowns
last week, found the going a little tougher this week.
He did however score two touchdowns in the game,
including a capping off a 10-play 64 yard 3:49 second drive with
a three-yard touchdown run and Shaw led 12-0.
The Bear defense was awesome
in the first half as on Johnson C. Smith’s (0-1, 0-1) nine
first half possession they punted three times, threw two
interceptions, lost two fumbles and turned the ball over on
downs twice. Reginald
Price (14 carries, 45 yards) scored the other rushing touchdown
for the Bears from one-yard out midway through the second
quarter giving the Bears a 20-0 halftime lead
Shaw received the ball to
begin the second half. On
the first play, quarterback Jermonty Kimbrough rushed for 61
yards to the Golden Bulls seven-yard line. On
the next play Cary rushed seven yards off the right side for the
touchdown and also scored the two-point conversion giving the
Bears a 28-0 lead. On the ensuing kickoff, Torrance Nunnally took the ball from
Kevin Woods and took it back 15 yards for the score and a 34-0
lead
From that point, the closest
the Golden Bulls would get would be two the Shaw 30 in the
fourth quarter but lost the ball on downs.
Defensive tackle Walif Campbell finished with eight
tackles, four for loss to lead the Bears defensively.
Defensive back Ricardo Safford and corner back Ricardo Safford
were all over the field recording six and five tackles,
respectively.
Shaw has a bye week next
week.

Shaw University Names Clark Head Football Coach
(Raleigh,
NC)—September 3, 2003-- Interim head football coach, Deondri
Clark, has been named the head football coach of Shaw
University, effective immediately.
Shaw
University President, Dr. Clarence G. Newsome, expressed his
confidence in the Bears’ new head coach. “Coach Clark has
been entrusted with a very important leadership position.
He is molding young men to compete effectively on the
field and in the classroom.
We are looking to Coach Clark to take the University’s
football program to new heights.
He has worked successfully with the team during the
summer, as well as during its first official CIAA game against
Livingstone. I feel confident that he will restore the roar
that has been missing on this campus for more than 20
years."
Clark
was named interim head coach on July 17th. Last year, he served
as the Bears' defensive coordinator.
Prior to coming to Shaw, Clark was the defensive line
coach at Benedict College (2001-02).
He was also a graduate assistant coach at Michigan State
University (2000-01) and Central Michigan University
(1999-2000).
He holds a Master's Degree in Sports Administration from
Central Michigan.
A
native of Winter Garden, Fla. and a 1993 graduate of Florida
State University, Clark was a standout defensive lineman for the
Seminoles and legendary Coach Bobby Bowden.
He played on four Florida State teams that won bowl
games.
His record as a Seminole was 42-7 and Florida State never
finished less than #4 in the AP rankings.
He was also a member of the first ACC football
championship team at Florida State.
Shaw
participated in the CIAA for the first time since 1978 this past
Saturday, pulling out a 44-34 victory over Livingstone College.
Last season, the Bears competed as a club team, finishing
the season with a 7-3 record.
Clark
is married to the former Dawn Herd of Indianapolis, IN, and they
have a son, Deondri II.

blocking as Shaw amassed 559 yards of total offense. The

Shaw Gives Bears the Blues
First Win in CIAA for Shaw since 1977
The year was 1977.
The date was October 1.
That was the last time Shaw won a game in the CIAA, a
19-12 victory over Bowie State.
Since that game, Shaw had lost 15-straight CIAA games.
Until now.
Freshman Byron Cary rushed
for 215 yards on 31 carries and three touchdowns as the Bears
beat Livingstone 44-34 before a crowd of 4,203 at John Baker
Stadium. The Bears,
playing for the first time in the NCAA since 1978, snapped a
17-game losing streak in NCAA play.
Shaw (1-0, 1-0) began its
new era of football with an onside kick, catching the Blue Bears
off guard. Shaw
recovered and began its first drive in 25 years on the
Livingstone 49 yard line. Quarterback
Jermonty Kimbrough (218 yards passing, 83 yards rushing) had a
big hand in the opening drive.
On the first two plays, he rushed for consecutive gains
of eight and two yards for a Bear first down.
Three plays later, Kimbrough found tight end Calvin
Grimes (four catches, 41 yards) for 10 yards and another Bear
first down. The
Bears continued to move the ball methodically, mixing the run
with the pass. After a seven-yard rush by Cary was negated by a holding
penalty, Kimbrough found wide receiver Mark Bransom (six
catches, 94 yards) for a 25-yard touchdown and a 7-0 Shaw lead.
Kimbrough completed 3-of-5 passes for 40 yards during the
drive. On the Blue
Bears ensuing possession, Vondrell Lovett intercepted Joel
Ward’s pass and returned it 34 yards for a touchdown as Shaw
took a 14-0 lead.
But Livingstone (0-1, 0-1)
would begin to settle down.
On Shaw’s next possession, Santana Loudermilk forced a
Bear fumble, which was recovered by Obadiah Johnson and the Blue
Bears started on their own 38.
On the second play of the drive, Ward found Chris Jeter
for a 38-yard pass to the Shaw 15.
Patrick Pope capped off the four-play 62-yard drive with
a 13-yard touchdown run as the Blue Bears cut their deficit to
14-7.
The Blue Bear defense began
to step up forcing Shaw into a turnover on downs, a fumble and a
punt on its next three possessions.
The Bears began their next possession first and 10 from
their own 20 late in the second quarter. Cary, Vetus Perry (six carries, 29 yards) and Kimbrough
combined to rush for 54 yards to the Livingstone 24.
The Bears drive was stalled and Chester Charles’
43-yard field goal attempt was blocked by Jason Ocean, who
returned it 65 yards for a touchdown, tying the score 14-14.
A late drive by the Bears stalled when Kimbrough’s pass
to Travis Wells went incomplete as the teams went in to halftime
with the score tied at 14-14.
The Bears took the lead
again as Kimbrough’s 36-yard run moved the ball into
Livingstone territory. Four
plays later, Cary rushed for his first of three touchdowns, this
one for 34 yards. The
extra-point attempt failed, but the Bears led 20-14.
The Blue Bears would take the lead on the ensuing
possession as, on the second play, Ward found Chris Jeter wide
open for a 55-yard touchdown pass and a 21-20 Blue Bear lead.
The Bears would regain the lead as Cary rushed for a
30-yard touchdown. Kimbrough
completed a pass to Damon Harrison for the two-point conversion
and the Bears took a 28-21 lead.
Both defenses stopped fourth down conversions on each of
the team’s next possessions. On Livingstone’s next possession, Ward and Jeter connected
again, this time for an 80-yard pass-and-catch touchdown, tying
the score at 28-28.
On the ensuing kickoff,
Kenneth Robinson returned the kickoff 62 yards to the
Livingstone 31. Perry
then rushed for 19 yards to the Livingstone 1.
Kimbrough capped off the drive, rushing off the left side
into the endzone for what would be the game-winning touchdown.
Kimbrough also carried the ball over the goal line for
the two-point conversion giving the Bears a 36-28 lead late in
the third quarter.
From that point it looked as
if the Bears were in control defensively.
Edwin Winstead sacked Ward for a loss of three yards,
which was followed by a Livingstone personal foul.
On fourth and 35, Walif Campbell and Jacques Lewis
stopped Jeter for a four-yard gain and Shaw took over on downs.
On Livingstone’s next possession, Deven Chatman
intercepted Ward’s pass. The Bear offense didn’t fair much better turning the ball
over on consecutive possessions.
Livingstone, however, would take advantage, putting
together a seven-play 60-yard scoring drive, capped off by
Pope’s two-yard touchdown run. During the 3:06 drive, the Blue Bears converted a fourth and
two on a 15-yard reception by Lamont Stephens.
Livingstone’s two-point conversion failed as Marcus
Mercer knocked down the pass attempt and the Shaw lead was 36-34
with 3:54 remaining in the game.
The Bears put an exclamation point on the victory as Cary
scored on a six-yard run, his third touchdown of the game, the
key play being a 48-yard reception by Charles Leonard, one of
two passes Kimbrough completed in the second half.
Shaw
gained 559 yards of total offense, 341 on the ground. The Bears neat game will be at Johnson C. Smith next Saturday
at 6:00 p.m.

Howell Presents Hall of Fame Inductee
Hornsby Howell, director of football
operations at Shaw University, was the presenter for Pro
Football Hall of Fame inductee Elvin Bethea in the induction
ceremony held in Canton, OH. Howell, a 1950 graduate of North
Carolina A&T State University, coached Bethea at N.C.
A&T, who starred for the Aggies from 1964-68.
Bethea's induction began as ESPN's Chris Berman introduced
Bethea as an inductee. A narrated video of Bethea's playing days
with the Houston Oiler's was then shown, after which Berman
introduced Howell as Bethea's presenter.
"As Elvin Bethea's former football coach, I feel honored
to be here on this momentous occasion before football's greatest
to introduce him," said Howell. "I reflect back to the
summer of 1964 when he came to play for me. 'I'm the best
offensive lineman you've ever had' he would say. I put up with
that for one year. Then Claude Humphries of Tennessee State [a
dominating defensive lineman who played for years with the
Atlanta Falcons] and Elvin had a big battle, Elvin as an
offensive lineman.
"After the game I wrote Claude a nice little note 'thank
you very much.' And so from then on Elvin was a defensive
player," as the Hall of Fame crowd reacted with much
laughter.
Howell then introduced Bethea, who thanked the Hall of Fame
committee for the induction. He then went on to talk about how
his mother chose A&T for him to go to college and also about
Howell.
"...Coach Howell. Here is a man I thought was insane,
crazy, out of his head," Bethea said. "He is the man
that put me here today and I will say that to anyone.
"Coach Howell would push me to the point of no return,
to the limit and beyond. I remember the three practices a day
and that's what it took to get me here today and I say thank you
coach," as Bethea turned and looked towards Howell and the
crowd applauded.
This will be Howell's second season as director of football
operations at Shaw. He worked at A&T for over 20 years, as a
trainer and interim athletics director. He also served as head
football coach at A&T from 1968-1977, amassing a record of
47-34-4. The Aggies won the CIAA Championship in 1968 and a
share of the 1975 MEAC Championship. Howell has also served as
administrative assistant to the assistant athletics director at
the University of Georgia and interim athletics director at
Savannah State.

Defense Strong in Spring Game
Despite the rain in the beginning,
Shaw held its first spring football game in 25 years at Ligon
Field. As was such last season, the defense was strong and
came away with a 66-30 victory. The defense, as well as
the offense was awarded a certain amount of points for various
plays.Torrance Nunnally (four tackles)
started the scoring for the defense as he returned an
interception 25 yards for a touchdown which gave the defense a 12-0
lead. The offense struggled to hold on to the ball for
much of the game, as the slippery conditions caused nine fumbles
on the day, seven of which were recovered by the defense.
Running back Dion McIver had some nice runs
and carried the load for the offense, rushing 14 times for 28
yards. He also caught a pass for 18 yards. The
offense did come up with a big play as Jermonty Kimbrough
completed his only pass of the day, 61 yards to wide receiver
Calvin Grimes (3-72). Grimes also caught a five-yard
touchdown pass from Gerrard Everett (3-6-36).
Defensive back Khaleel Sutherland had a big
game making four tackles (3 solo), one for loss, recovering a
fumble and defending a pass. Walif Campbell and Jerry Shaw
were tough on the interior. Campbell was in mid-season
form recording three tackles and
two fumble recoveries. Shaw had three tackles and a fumble
recovery.
Note: The defense received five points
for recovering a fumble, one point for tackles behind the line
of scrimmage and two points for stopping a fourth down inside
the 50.
