Shaw Wins Homecoming
The year was 1974.  That was the last time Shaw won a homecoming game, a 16-12 victory over Winston-Salem State.

Shaw overcame a 21-14 deficit and scored the last three touchdowns and beat Webber International 35-21 before a homecoming crowd of 7,013 at John Baker Stadium.

Neither team moved the ball much in the first quarter.  Webber International (3-1) scored first in the second quarter as Ean Randolph scored on a 17-yard touchdown pass from Chad Schilsky and the Warriors took a 7-0 lead.  Shaw (7-3) would come back as Shawn Woodard returned a punt 69 yards for a touchdown, which tied the score at 7-7.  Shaw took the lead as Torrance Nunnally blocked a Warrior punt and returned it 29 yards for the score and a 14-7 Bears lead.  Webber International would score the next two touchdowns, the last of which, Randolph’s second touchdown of the game, a 14-yard reception from Brian Coconato.  The Warriors took a 21-14 halftime lead.

Just as it looked like the Bears could not get anything going offensively, the Bears defense came through.  With one play the game changed as Nunnally scored his second touchdown of the game on a DeMario Marshall fumble of a reception and Nunnally scooped it up and ran it in 44 yards for a touchdown, which tied the game at 21-21.  Running back Dion McIver scored Shaw’s last two touchdowns from one and six yards out to close out Shaw’s victory.  Christopher Peavy led the Bears defense with seven tackles.  Deven Chatman had four tackles and three passes defended.

The Bears finish the season 7-3, ending their club season and will compete in the CIAA in 2003.

Shaw Overwhelms Bethel

RALEIGH – Running back Dion McIver was instrumental in the Bears offense, rushing for 213 of the Bears 541 total yards of offense in a 56-38 beating of Bethel College before a crowd of 1,603 at Baker Stadium.

Bethel (3-6) scored first as Mario Merriwether scored on a 24-yard touchdown run which gave the Wildcats a 7-0 lead midway through the first quarter.  Shaw (6-3) answered as Gerrard Everett found Tushun Newton for the first of his two touchdown catches which tied the score at 7-7.  Bethel, who tallied 284 yards of total offense, would strike again as Kynnis Shelton was on the receiving end of a Jonathan Cook’s 28-yard touchdown pass.  The Wildcats missed the extra point but still had a 13-7 lead.

The Bears were forced to punt on their next possession and William Sanders’ punt resulted in a touchback giving the Wildcats first and 10 from their own 20.  On the first play, Ralph Davis forced a fumble and Omer Wilson recovered at the Bethel 20.  On the next play, Daniel Moore scampered up the middle for a 20-yard touchdown and a 14-13 Bear lead.  The Bears defense, led by Walif Campbell’s seven tackles, forced the Wildcats to a three-and-out.  Laurel Johnson blocked the punt and the Bears recovered on the Wildcats six.  On fourth and goal from the one Reginald Price scored a touchdown.  Chester Charles’ extra point attempt was blocked and a Wildcat defender tried to pick up the ball and lateral it to one of his teammates, who was in the endzone and was tackled by the Bears for a safety.  A safety on an extra point results in one point and the Bears held a 21-13 lead.  Bethel would hold the lead at halftime as they scored on a field goal and a Ben Gean 81-yard fumble recovery with 23 seconds remaining in the half, which gave the Wildcats a 22-21 lead.

The Wildcats extended its lead to 32-21 as Merriwether scored his second touchdown of the day on a 28-yard run and a Scott Finley 40-yard field goal.  The Bears would not go away however, as McIver scored one of his two touchdowns on the day from 15 yards out to cut the Bears deficit to 32-28.  Demareo O’Neal took the ensuing kickoff 70 yards for a touchdown and a 38-28 Wildcat lead.  The Bears then used a mix of pass and run to score four unanswered touchdowns as T.J. Mitchell caught a 25-yard touchdown pass, his first of the season, from Everett.  Kendall Nunn caught a 30-yard touchdown pass.  Newton caught his second touchdown pass of the day, this time from 40 yards out and McIver scampered 91 yards for his second touchdown of the day to seal the win.

Everett completed 12-of-25 passes for 173 yards with 4 touchdowns and no interceptions.
