Four Bears Hit Double Figures As Shaw Defeats Lincoln 77-60 (Lincoln, PA) – Four Lady Bears scored in double digits and Shaw outrebounded the Lady Lions 45 to 29 as the Lady Bears ended their three-game losing streak with a 77-60 win over Lincoln.
After a first half where the only real difference was in the number of free throws made, Shaw built on its six-point lead early in the second, slowly pulling away for the lopsided victory. Shaw broke the game open early with Johnson hitting three straight three-pointers followed by a layup that gave the Lady Bears the 15-8 lead with 15:57 left in the game. The Lady Lions then scored ten unanswered points to take the 18-15 lead with 13:14 left. They built the lead to six as late as 5:21 left in the half. McGaughey then led the Lady Bears on a 12-0 run to close the half with seven points of her own. The two teams made the same number of baskets and the same number of threes in the first, but Shaw was 11 for 14 from the free throw line, while the Lady Lions were five for nine. As the second half started, the Lady Bears added to their lead, but the Lady Lions chipped away and with 14:30 left in the game, Chanelle Harris hit a three for Lincoln to cut Shaw’s lead to three at 50-47. The Lady Bears ran off another scoring streak – this one 13 points – to stretch the lead to 16. Lincoln could not get inside double digits and Shaw eventually built the lead to 19 before closing with the 17-point win. Freshman Shandrea Thomas led the Lady Bears with 13 rebounds. McGaughey had six assists. Dejuana Mosley led the Lady Lions with 20 points, while Harris had 14 and Sharay DuBose had 12. Mfon Ekanem led Lincoln with seven rebounds. The Lady Bears continue their road trip in Bowie, MD Monday at 5:30. They return home Saturday, January 30, 2010 against Fayetteville State at 5:30 in C. C. Spaulding Gymnasium.
