Shaw’s Raheem Smith and Jacques Curtis Earn CIAA Honors

(Raleigh, NC) – Shaw’s Raheem Smith (left) today earned CIAA Men’s Basketball Player of the Week honors, while women’s coach Jacques Curtis (right) was named CIAA Women’s Basketball Coach of the Week.

Smith earned the recognition based on his performances in Shaw’s overtime loss to Bowie State, and their win over Virginia State.  Against VSU, Smith had 20 points, four assists, and four steals to help Shaw fend off a second half comeback by the Trojans.  Against Bowie, he had 13 points and three assists.

Curtis led the Lady Bears to two wins this past week: 53-46 over Bowie State and an impressive 51-44 victory over 18th ranked Virginia State.  The loss to Shaw was VSU’s first CIAA defeat this season.  Shaw is now one of three teams that lead the CIAA with only one conference loss.

Shaw returns home Saturday for a doubleheader against Elizabeth City State.  The women tip at 5:30, with the men to follow at 7:30 in C. C. Spaulding Gymnasium.
