Shaw Powers Past Livingstone 68-50 On Second Half Run
Livingstone (8-13, 4-11 CIAA) captured a lead early in the second half on a three pointer by Kayler McBride, but Shaw (14-7, 9-6 CIAA) roared back, outscoring the Lady Blue Bears 19-1 over the next five minutes and taking a 47-30 lead with 14:12 left in the game.
Both teams struggled to find their rhythm in the opening minutes of the first half. Ten minutes into the game, the score was only eight to seven in favor of Livingstone.
For most of the first, Livingstone held on to a lead and held off the Lady Bears, allowing them to come within a point, and even tie the game a few times early in the period.
With 2:28 remaining in the first, Brittany Wright hit two free throws to give the Lady Blue Bears a three-point lead, 24-21. Those proved to be the last points Livingstone scored in the half, while Shaw ran off seven straight points – five on free throws - to close the period and take the 28-24 lead into the locker room.
The Lady Blue Bears opened the second half with five straight points, but Tanisha McGaughey (left) gave Shaw the lead with a three pointer with 18:35 left that began Shaw’s 19-1 run.
After Maggie Tanner’s jumper gave Shaw the 17-point lead with 14:12 left in the game, Livingstone never pulled within single digits.
Livingstone struggled to find a shooting touch all evening, hitting only 29 percent from the floor. The Lady Bears hit 44 percent, and had a definite free throw advantage, shooting 33 from the stripe to 15 for Livingstone.
McGaughey led Shaw with 20 points while Janelle Harrison had 15 and Niesha Searles had 12. Harrison led the Lady Bears with nine points and with seven assists.
For Livingstone, McBride had 17 points, and seven rebounds. Shaquetta Brooks had seven rebounds as well.
The Lady Bears return to action Thursday when they travel to Fayetteville State for a 5:30 tip.
