Shaw Falls To JCSU 39-38 in Low-Scoring Affair (Charlotte, NC) – In a game where neither team could find the net, Johnson C. Smith’s shooting average of 31.3 percent was enough to defeat Shaw 39-38. Shaw (12-7, 7-6 CIAA) shot 26.8 percent in a game marked by poor shooting and turnovers. Shaw’s Tanisha McGaughey turned in a strong performance scoring 16 of her team’s 38 points, pulling in six rebounds and three steals. JCSU (15-6, 8-6 CIAA) was led by Shakira Clarke with 11 points. In the first, the Lady Golden Bulls jumped out to an early lead, scoring the first eight points of the contest. With 16:44 left in the period, Niesha Searles hit a layup to finally put the Lady Bears on the scoreboard. Shaw went another six and a half minutes before scoring again, when McGaughey hit a three pointer to put the score at 13-5. The Lady Bears whittled away at the Lady Golden Bulls lead until 2:41 was left in the half, when Searles’ trey tied the game at 17. The teams exchanged buckets and went into the half in a 21-21 tie. Shaw took the early lead in the second, and built the lead to 28-22 on Searles’ jumper with 16:19 left in the game. JCSU then scored the next six points to re-tie the game. With 9:59 left in the game, Terran Quattlebaum hit a three that gave JCSU the lead that they never relinquished. Shaw cut the lead to one with eight seconds left on McGaughey’s jumper. Three seconds later, Searles stole the ball, giving the Lady Bears a last chance at the win, but McGaughey’s jumper bounced off the rim, giving JCSU the 39-38 victory. Searles had nine points on the night. Shandrea Thomas led the Lady Bears with seven rebounds. Brittane Neely and Clarke led JCSU with eight rebounds. The Lady Bears return home Monday, February 8 for a game against Livingstone at 5:30.
