Shaw Breaks Open Game In the Second, Defeats Chowan 48-38 (Murfreesboro, NC) – Midway through the second half, Shaw University broke open what had been a close game and went on to defeat Chowan University 48-38. With 12:34 left in the game, Niesha Searles hit a three that gave Shaw (13-7, 8-6 CIAA) a one-point lead. Chowan (7-13, 4-11 CIAA) did not score for another three minutes, by which time Shaw had built a seven-point lead. The Lady Bears never let Chowan back in the game, building the lead to as many as 12 with 1:18 to play. Neither team shot well in the game, with Shaw hitting 28.3 percent from the floor, while Chowan managed only 27.1 percent, but it was Chowan’s second half cold streak (four for 21 for 19 percent) that sealed their fate against the Lady Bears. Janelle Harrison led the Lady Bears with 12 points, while Searles had nine. Victoria Tanner led Shaw with 12 rebounds. Talaya Lynch led the Hawks with 14 points and eight rebounds, while Brittany Nicholson had five assists to lead Chowan. The Lady Bears return home Monday for a game against Livingstone College at 5:30 p.m.
