Turnovers Lead to Shaw Loss to Livingstone 70-61 (Salisbury, NC) – Tanisha McGaughey had 25 points, but it wasn’t enough to overcome 30 Shaw turnovers as the Lady Bears lost to Livingstone 70-61. Shaw (11-6 overall, 6-5 in the CIAA) outrebounded Livingstone (7-10, 3-8 in the CIAA) 53-29, and went to the free throw line twice as often as the Lady Blue Bears (23-10). But an off shooting night (36.1 percent from the floor) for Shaw and a hot three-point stroke for Livingstone (seven of 23), made it impossible to overcome the ten-turnover margin (30-20) the Lady Bears held over the Blue Bears. In the first half, the Lady Bears sank the first basket, but it was the only lead they held, as Livingstone built as much as a 13-point lead with 7:11 left in the first. In the second, the Lady Bears fought back, starting the half on a 14-6 run on buckets from five different Lady Bears. With 13:41 left in the game, Niesha Searles hit a jumper that tied the score at 41. Searles hit two more jumpers – to only one from the Lady Blue Bears – and Shaw took a 45-43 lead. But the Lady Blue Bears roared back, scoring 14 unanswered points until Shandrea Thomas found the bottom of the net for the Lady Bears, cutting the Livingstone lead to 10, 57-47. Shaw did not make a serious run after that, never pulling inside of ten points. McGaughey was the only Lady Bear in double digits. She also finished the evening with eight rebounds, five steals and two assists. Victoria Tanner led Shaw with ten rebounds and Shandrea Thomas had nine. Livingstone had four players in double figures, led by Kayler McBride with 18, Brittany Wright with 13, Elicia Gilliam-Washington with 12 and Rashida Elbourne with ten. Cassaundra Rhodes led the Lady Blue Bears with six rebounds. After three games on the road, the Lady Bears return home on Saturday, January 30, 2010 against Fayetteville State at 5:30 in C. C. Spaulding Gymnasium. Monday, they play host to cross-town rival Saint Augustine’s. January 28, 2010
