Saundra Proctor’s Threes Lead Shaw Over Virginia Union 68-64
The game set up as a classic “trap” game for Shaw (10-1, 6-1 CIAA). Straight off their upset victory of 18th-ranked Virginia State, the Lady Bears were met with the news that Virginia Union’s (3-9, 0-9 CIAA) top scorer, Tonaye Smith, had been suspended for the game. The Lady Bears would spend much of the first half with their leading scorer, McGaughey, on the bench in foul trouble. McGaughey, who averages over 39 minutes a game, played only eight minutes in the first half. The two teams kept it close throughout the first half. Five minutes into the game, VUU’s Sabrina Treakle hit a three pointer to give the Lady Panthers a three-point lead. That was the largest lead either team held. The Lady Panthers stayed in the game on the strength of their rebounding – especially under their own basket. They pulled in 13 boards in their own end, to only 11 for Shaw. The second half looked to be just as close. For the first nine minutes of the half, neither team managed a lead of more than three points. Johnson then hit two threes, followed by a jumper from Jan’el Baxter, putting the Shaw lead at seven. Just a minute later, the game was tied again on a bucket from Lavonna Spencer and two buckets and a free throw from Tysheka Simpson. Proctor then reeled off seven points – two threes and a free throw – to give the Lady Bears another seven point lead. Spencer’s treys kept the Lady Panthers closing, but McGaughey and Proctor kept the lead at four or above the rest of the way. Despite the foul trouble, McGaughey still managed double digits – scoring 14 for the Lady Bears. Victoria Tanner led Shaw with ten rebounds, while Johnson had six assists. For the Lady Panthers, Kara Scott had 17 points and 12 rebounds for the double-double. Treakle led VUU with six assists. The Lady Bears return home on Saturday, January 16 to face off against Elizabeth City State at 5:30 p.m. in C. C. Spaulding Gymnasium.January 11, 2010
