Shaw Uses Second Half Run and Balanced Scoring to Beat Central State 64-52

(RALEIGH, NC) –  Four Lady Bears scored in double figures – led by Tanisha McGaughey with 13 – and the Lady Bears fought off a persistent Central State squad 64-52.

With 17:51 left in the game, Shaw (6-1, 3-1 CIAA) held a slim two-point lead over the Lady Marauders, but then ran off 13 straight points to give them 47-32 lead which was never seriously threatened.

Applying a smothering full court press in the waning minutes of the game, the Lady Marauders cut the lead to seven with 2:13 left, but then had to begin fouling in order to stop the clock.

In the first half, Shaw scored 11 points in less than four minutes, but it took them ten minutes to score the next ten when McGaughey broke a 19-19 tie with a layup to give the Lady Bears 21.

Both teams struggled to find a rhythm in the opening period with a total of 27 turnovers (13 by Central State, 14 by Shaw).

McGaughey had 13 points to lead the Lady Bears, while Jan’el Baxter had 12, Janelle Harrison 11, and Quaticqua Johnson had 10.  Baxter led both team with 11 rebounds.

Brooklyn Morrow had 19 points for Central State with teammate Deshundra Gober tossing in 17.  Gober’s eight rebounds led the Lady Marauders.

The Lady Bears play against Valdosta State Saturday afternoon at 2 on the campus of the University of the District of Columbia in Washington, DC.
