Balanced Scoring and Strong Defense Leads Shaw Over UDC 65-48

(Washington, DC) – Four Lady Bears scored in double figures and a smothering defense led Shaw over the University of the District of Columbia 65-48.

The Lady Bears built an early 12-2 lead in just three minutes of play.  UDC fought back, pulling within one at 21-20 with 8:48 left in the first half.

The Lady Bears took control from that point forward, building a seven-point lead by the half and quickly building that to a 20-point advantage five minutes into the second half.

The Lady Firebirds again cut into the lead, closing to 11 with just over five minutes left in the game, but Shaw never let them get closer.

Tanisha McGaughey led the Lady Bears with 17 points, while Janelle Harrison had 16.  Victoria Tanner (13) and Quaticqua Johnson (12) also had double figures.  McGaughey led the team in both rebounds with eight and assists with six.

Nicole Cooper led the Lady Firebirds with 23 points – 21 of those off three-point shots.  Lillian McGill had 14.  McGill led UCD with 14 rebounds.

The Lady Bears return home for a game Thursday against Central State at 6 p.m. on C. C. Spaulding Gymnasium.
