Top News Lady Bears Volleyball Team Participate in Halloween Festival
Raleigh, NC – (November 24, 2008) The Lady Bears of Shaw University participated in the Carolina Pines and Walnut Terrace Community Center fall festivals on October 31st. They dressed up and handed out treats and played games with the kids at both facilities. Laura Aker, Head Coach stated, “I believe that the young ladies had fun helping the young kids of the neighborhood enjoy their day of fun by participating in this community service project.” That’s the Shaw U way!
Final Effort of Lady Bears
Falls Shy to Livingstone College 0-3
Raleigh, NC -(October
29,2008) The 2008 Volleyball season for the Lady Bears of Shaw University
has come to an end. In the final game of the season, they lost in a great
effort to Livingstone College 17-25, 14-25, 20-25.
Ashley Johnson put up
five kills, four assists and six digs for the game. Nikita Grant also added
five kills and four digs. Monica Grimmage had three kills and one dig while
Nia Bailey had eight assists, three aces and three digs in the game. Jade
Bibb had three kills and three digs and Marquita Wilson had two kills and
two digs. Coach Laura Aker and the Lady Bears are to be commended for
completing their 2008 season.

NC – (September 18, 2008) The Lady Bears of Shaw
University met a great opponent in Fayetteville State tonight at
C.C. Spaulding Gymnasium. Fighting until the end, the Lady Bears
loss in three matches 17-25, 16-25, 10-25.
Nikita Grant (SO/5'5/Parktown, NC) had an amazing performance with 7
kills and 11 digs. Monica Grimmage (FR/6'0/Georgetown, SC) had six
kills and eight digs. Ashley Johnson (FR/5'6/Garfield Heights, OH)
tossed in seven digs for the team total of 34. Nia Bailey
(FR/5'4/Shaker Heights, OH) had 21 assists for the Lady Bears.
The Lady Bears will take on Lincoln University on Saturday,
September 20th at 10:00 a.m. at C.C. Spaulding Gymnasium.
SHAW’S
MOORE NAMED
CIAA FEMALE CO-SCHOLAR ATHLETE OF THE YEAR
CIAA Female Co-Scholar Athletes of the Year
Ms. Moore is a senior,
International Relations major with a near perfect GPA of 3.99.
She made the 2008
All-CIAA and All-Tournament Women's Tennis teams; won the 2008 Chester Davis
Sportsmanship Award and Shaw's 2008 Female Athlete of the Year Award.
Academically, Kim was
named to the 2007-08 President's List; won 2008 CIAA All-Academic Honors;
won the 2008 Shaw Volleyball and Women's Tennis Award of Academic
Excellence, the 2008 President's Award of Academic Excellence and the
2007-08 Athletic Academic All-star Award.
The
co-recipient of the prestigious award was the eastern division's
Celeste Trahan of Elizabeth City State University. Shaw extends
congratulations to both student-athletes.
The CIAA Scholar
Athlete of the Year is an honor awarded to the top athlete in the conference
that has excelled both athletically and academically.

TO CIAA CHAMPIONSHIP RANKED #2 IN WEST
November 2, 2007 –
Hampton, VA – Congratulations and a “job well done” are due to Head
Coach Laura Aker and the Shaw University Volleyball Team as they are currently
ranked #2 in the Western Division. In CIAA Rankings, the Lady Bears are 3rd
in assists per game (529 total, 8.97 average per game), 2nd in kills
per game (666 total, 11.29 per game), 3rd in match won-loss
percentage (9 – 3 CIAA, .750 %), and 4th in digs per game (698 total,
11.83 per game).

Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) has recently released its
distinguished list of members voted to the All-CIAA Volleyball Team. The Lady
Bears have THREE stellar
student-athletes whose performance propelled as All-CIAA team finalists. Shaw’s
Cheryl Salter (#8 / Setter/ Senior / Biology
/ Alexander City, AL) was selected as All-CIAA First Team.

game against cross-town rival, the Lady Falcons on Saint Augustine’s College.
Before a sellout crowd, the Lady Bears subjugated SAC for a 3 – 0 sweep.

The CIAA’s second best team in kills (610, average of 11.09 per
game), the Shaw University Lady Bears participated in head-to-head
competition with the CIAA’s second best team in blocks (149.5,
average of 1.99 per game), the Lady Blue Bears of Livingstone
College. The Lady Bears’ charge of victory was short circuited after
the first match. Livingstone lingered away with the win 3 – 1.

Fayetteville in Western Division Dual
October 17, 2007 –
Raleigh, NC – Little did fans
know that freshly polished hardwood floors in C.C. Spalding Gymnasium would be
converted into tense turf for a western division showdown. The number two seeded
Shaw University Lady Bears (9 – 8 Overall, 9 – 2 CIAA, 4 – 1 Division) tightly
laced up their NikeŽ athletic footwear as they hosted the undefeated and number
one seeded Lady Broncos of Fayetteville State University (15 – 10 Overall, 9 – 0
CIAA, 4 – 0 Division).The serve-for-serve shootout ceased with the Lady Bears
being defeated by FSU 3 – 0 for the loss.

Raleigh, NC – Three hundred seconds transpired during the Shaw University Lady Bears’ travel to the athletic facility of their backdoor neighbors, the Lady Falcons of Saint Augustine’s College on Friday, September 28, 2007. It was just 4,800 seconds later that the Lady Bears would claw their name into the prestigious athletic record books of school history.
