SPORTS Shaw University Softball Team Tops Division II for Steals
(RALEIGH, NC) – Shaw University has been notified by the NCAA that it finished the 2009 Softball season as the top team in Division II in the steals per game statistic. The Lady Bears, who went 12-19 on the season, stole a total of 167 bases for an average of 5.39 steals a game. “I really wasn’t expecting this – I hadn’t realized we were stealing more frequently than other teams. I’m thrilled for our team. These players worked hard on all aspects of the game, and clearly that work paid off on the base paths,” said Kimberly Miller, first-year Shaw University Softball Coach. The second ranked team, Miles College, finished an entire steal a game behind Shaw, with 4.39. Interestingly, the third through ninth slots are all held by member institutions of the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (CIAA):
“This conference plays a hard-nosed type of game – singles, good pitching, strong fielding, and intelligence when we’re on base. It probably shouldn’t be surprising that the entire conference did so well in this area,” said Miller. In addition to leading in steals per game, the Lady Bears finished in 15th in triples per game, 19th in scoring, and 46th in batting average out of the more than 250 schools that compete in Division II softball. The Lady Bears open the 2010 season on February 4, 2010, by hosting West Virginia State University at the Walnut Creek Softball Complex.
