She followed up with a basket and drew the foul; 3 point play good. Bears were down 42-45. Clearly her half, Bozeman scored another 3 pointer and the bench called the timeout; Shaw 51-55. Guess what? She did it again. McGaughey scored the lay-up and the Bears were down 56-57 with 4:40 on the clock. Vivian Sansom Tip-Off Slated at Shaw University
Raleigh, NC - (November 12, 2008) The Vivian M. Sansom Tip-Off is scheduled for November 22nd in honor of Mrs. Vivian Merrick Sansom, a former professor for 36 years at Shaw University and one of its proudest supporters. The format for the Tip-Off, usually a weekend basketball tournament has changed but the recognition and appreciation of the prestigious honoree remains the same. The featured game is against Johnson C. Smith University at 5:30 p.m. in C.C. Spaulding Gymnasium.
Mrs. Sansom began her career at Shaw in 1960 and taught health and wellness, tennis, swimming, golf, archery, golf, jazz, tap and modern dance. Also during her tenure, she served as the cheerleading coach. Mrs. Sansom retired in 1996.
During the course of a successful 36-year career at Shaw, she inspired, mentored and encouraged students to excel against all odds and remains very true to the University. She can be seen attending men and women’s basketball games and other Shaw and CIAA athletic events.
Mrs. Sansom has maintained a desire to serve as a positive role model, building the self-esteem of young women who have had limited opportunities and resources. At one time when housing was unavailable for female students, she gave a young woman the opportunity to reside in her home and continue the pursuit of education. This act, like many others that she had done, encouraged others to make housing available to female students; no small feat.
Her early career included volunteer and part-time physical education work at North Carolina Central University. She co-founded the play school at W.D. Hill Recreation Center in Durham. While at North Carolina Central she worked with the legendary John McLendon, one of the founders of the CIAA basketball tournament, and has been witness to every CIAA basketball tournament since the first tournament began in 1946. She also served as the Director of Health, Physical Education and Recreation at the YMCA in Winston-Salem, NC.
Mrs. Sansom resides in Raleigh and is a member of the American Alliance of Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance; NC Alliance of Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance; National Dance Association; The Link’s, Inc., and Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc.
Please make plans to attend this game in honor of a “true steward of excellence, humanity and service.”
Shaw University salutes Mrs. Vivian M. Sansom!
