April 10, 2008 Raleigh, NC Cleo Hill, Jr. was announced as the new coach of Men’s Basketball during a Press Conference today on the campus of Shaw University.  Dr. Clarence G. Newsome, President of Shaw University made the announcement before a standing room only audience of eager supporters including Board of Trustee members, Administration, faculty, staff, alumni and students.

February 27, 2008Charlotte, NC The 10th seeded Shaw University Bears hushed all nay-sayers and “doubting Toms” when they downed the 7th seeded Livingstone College Blue Bears 74 – 60 in Round One of the 63rd Annual CIAA Men’s Basketball Tournament. The tall triumph served as Shaw’s first tournament advancement since the 2002 – 2003 season and as Head Coach Robert Brickey’s first tournament win.

February 19, 2008Raleigh, NC – The Shaw University Bears honored their seniors prior to play against the Virginia State University Trojans. After 14 ties and Shaw scoring four players in double figures, the Bears were beaten by the Trojans, 77 – 73. The Bears record now stands at 4 – 22 Overall, 1 – 17 CIAA, and 1 – 7 Division.


Leading the Bears in scoring was #1 Will Graham with a game high 24 points (four rebounds / three assists / four steals). Providing additional scoring was #11 John Douros with 14 points (one assist), #00 Cori Gaither with 11 points (five rebounds / three assists), and #34 John Kornegay with 10 points (four rebounds / one assist / two steals). King of the Boards was #20 Robert Espinosa (Forward / 6 – 7 / 195 / Senior / Plainfield, NJ) with one offensive rebound and a game high 11 defensive rebounds for a game high 12 rebounds.


The Shaw University Bears will prepare to play in the 63rd Annual CIAA Men’s Basketball Tournament held in Charlotte, NC starting on February 27th through March 1st.

Shaw Slides to Seventh Straight Loss  
 

February 16, 2008Wake County, NC – The Shaw University Bears hosted the Johnson C. Smith Golden Bulls in Broughton High School’s Holliday Gymnasium. Despite possession a lead as large as nine points, the Bears were burned in the second half by JCSU’s 62.5% (15 of 24) field goal percentage to be defeated, 81 – 67. The Bears record now stands at 4 – 21 Overall, 1 – 16 CIAA, and 1 – 7 Division.


Leading the Bears in scoring was #11 John Douros with a game high 17 points (three rebounds / two assists). Providing additional scoring was #30 Damola Obadina with 16 points (four rebounds). King of the boards was a two-way tie between #34 John Kornegay (six points / two assists / one steal) and Obadina with five rebounds each.


The Shaw University Bears will take on the Tigers of Saint Paul’s College on Tuesday, February 16th in C. C. Spaulding. The “Senior Night” competition is scheduled to start at 7:30 p.m.

February 14, 2008Fayetteville, NC – The Shaw University Bears took a trip to Felton J. Capel Arena to play the Broncos of Fayetteville State University.  The Bears “rodeoed” the Broncos for a majority of the match-up, but Shaw was robbed of their 13 point lead in overtime to be defeated, 73 – 67. The Bears record now stands at 4 – 20 Overall, 1 – 15 CIAA, and 1 – 6 Division.


Leading the Bears in scoring for the Bears was led in scoring by #34 John Kornegay with 17 points (one rebound / three assists). February 12, 2008Raleigh, NC – The Shaw University Bears laced up their leather athletic footwear to take on the No. 4 Ranked (South Atlantic Region) Virginia Union University Panthers.  The Bears were not able to overcome the Panther’s plump point margin of 34 points early in the second half. Shaw was stunned by the Panthers, 81 – 56. The Bears record now stands at 4 – 19 Overall, 1 – 14 CIAA, and 1 – 5 Division.
 

Leading the Bears in scoring for the Bears was #30 Damola Obadina (Forward / 6 – 5 / 240 / Senior / Minneapolis, MN) with nine points (a team high eight rebounds). February 9, 2008 Bowie, MD – The Shaw University Bears accelerated to A.C. Jordan Arena for their nationally televised athletic test against the Bowie State University Bulldogs. Shaw set the nets on fire as they sunk 12 of 23 attempts shots for a fiery 52.2% field goal percentage to take a slim lead late in the first half. Nevertheless, the Bears were given third degree burns after the Bulldogs blasted off for a 64.3% (18 of 28) second half field goal percentage. The CIAA competition concluded with Shaw losing to the Bulldogs, 79 – 59. The Bears record now stands at 4 – 18 Overall, 1 – 13 CIAA, and 1 – 5 Division.

Leading the Bears in scoring was #34 John Kornegay (Guard / 5 – 10 / 180 / Senior / Detroit, MI) with 11 points (three rebounds / one assist). Obadina Scored Game High 27 in Bears 82-77 Victory over St. Paul’s

 

Raleigh, NC- The Bears of Shaw University (3-19; 1-14 CIAA) got their first conference win of the season behind Damola Obadina (6’5, JR, Forward, Minneapolis, MN) who not only scored a game high but also season high 27 points. Obadina also recorded his seventh double-double of the season as he snatched 11 rebounds to go with those 27 points in the Bears 82-77 win over the Tigers of Saint Paul’s College (9-11; 5-8 CIAA). Shaw shot an impressive 48.6% in the first half hitting 18 of their 37 shots to take the lead 41-35 at the break. St. Paul’s only shot 46%. The Bears would repeat their play in the second half to score 41 points, which would carry them to their victory over the Tigers. More

Elizabeth City, NC Shaw made only 19 of their 29 free throws for the game tonight, which could have made the difference in the end. It was a tough game for the Bears (2-19, 0-14 CIAA) as they loss another tight one to the Vikings of Elizabeth City State (10-11, 6-8 CIAA). Shaw got of to a great start in the first half as there was five ties and five lead changes in the first half alone. In the second things were going good until they went too the charity stripe. Shaw struggled in the first half of play, scoring only 12 points on 20% shooting. The Bears would improve offensively in the second half, scoring three times as many points before eventually falling by a final score of 69-48 to Virginia Union. More

Raleigh, NC Cori Gaither (6’5, JR, Forward, Jacksonville, FL) dropped 24 points on the Trojans of Virginia State University ( 11-3; 6-1 CIAA; 2-1 East) who are having their best season since 1975. Gaither also recorded his first double-double of the season with 10 rebounds as the Bears of Shaw University (2-12; 0-8 CIAA; 0-3 East) lost to Virginia State 71-83. More

Raleigh, NC In what was a hard fought game for the Bears of Shaw University (2-11; 0-6 CIAA) that came down to the wire against the Eagles of North Carolina Central University (6-6; 2-4 CIAA). What a game it was between these two teams who have been looking for that win for so long. The Bears will just have to wait a little while longer to get that win as they went to wall tonight in a tough loss in C.C. Spaulding Gymnasium. Damola Obadina (6’5, JR, Forward, Minneapolis, MN) led the Bears in scoring and rebounds with 17 points and 7 boards against the Vikings. More
