The Hard Fought Road Ends in CIAA Tournament Play
Shaw Bears Out in First Round
Charlotte, NC – (February 27, 2009) The dream of playing for the 2009 CIAA Tournament Championship has been deferred until next year for the Bears of Shaw University (12-15). Following a season of exciting and fierce competition, the athletic soldiers met a poised adversary on the court; Johnson C. Smith University (20-7) playing before their hometown fans. The Bears lost in the first game of the Tournament 63-82.
The first half of the game was totally uncharacteristic of the skillful execution that had become synonymous with Shaw basketball. Game jitters, numerous errors, turnovers and missed opportunities plagued the team. The Bears shot 44.4% from the free throw line and made 10-21 field goals for a showing of 47.6% for the half. Johnson C. Smith shot 65.2% from the free throw line and 50% in field goals. The game was tied twice and the Bears never led in the half. Working to make adjustments, the bench contributed 20 of the first half 27 points. The Bears went into the locker room down 27-39.
The second half got underway and it seemed as if the Bears were developing a rhythm as four points were scored right away. The momentum and athleticism never wavered for the Golden Bulls. They continued to mount their lead having gone on a 15-3 run on the Bears in 5:50 of the second half. Ryan Scott continued to lead the Bulls shooting an incredible 80% in field goals and 100% in 3 pointers.
Adrian Bascom (Wilmington, NC) and Raheem Smith (Greenville, NC) were assessed technical fouls and Bascom, Eddie Dawson (Camilla, GA) and Rodney Callwood (Hempstead, NY) fouled out of the game; game play never happened like this before. The Bears never recovered from the point deficit and the Bulls won 82-63. Smith was the scoring leader for the Bears with 17 points, 4 rebounds and 1 assist. Will Graham (Minneapolis, MN) added 11 points, 3 rebounds and 2 assists as he rallied at the end of the game. Callwood and Travis Nelson both scored 7 points; Nelson added 3 rebounds, 1 assist and 3 blocks and Callwood added 2 blocked shots.
The final buzzer has gone off for the 2008-2009 season for the Bears. Tonight’s performance was out of sync but what we know for sure is that the Bears were formidable opponents in the CIAA Conference this year. Their record is not a true reflection of the incredible athleticism, skill and excitement that they brought to their fans and opponents. They have worked hard and tirelessly and they proved without question that they deserved to be in the big dance. Cleo Hill, Jr., first year Head Coach stated, “I am proud of my team. My family and I are products of this Conference and I returned because of this Tournament.” Like Coach Hill, the Shaw Family is proud and salutes and congratulates the Bears basketball program. We look forward to fulfilling their dream that is only deferred; Shaw has a proven winning tradition.

Bears Get 1st Win of Season over Livingstone 73-55
Raleigh, NC – (November 25, 2008) The Bears (3-1, 1-1) of Shaw University displayed impressive team work and athletic prowess on the court versus the Blue Bears of Shaw University and won their first game of the season 73-55. With their best first half start of the season, the Bears ended the first half 38-32 following exciting dunks and jumpers on the court. Cleo Hill, Jr., Head Coach of the Bears got the first win of his career with the Bears. He stated, “The team played great defense and even though I sweated through it, it feels really good to get the win.”
Chris Sellers ((Mobile, AL) led the Bears in the first half with 10 points and two rebounds. Adrian Bascom (Wilmington, NC) and Will Graham (Minneapolis, MN) both tossed in six points for the Bears. The Bears shot 80% from the free throw line and 53.3% on field goal percentage.
The second half got off to a quick start as the Bears were quickly fouled by Spencer Davis of the Blue Bears. Sellers made one of two free throws on the play and the Bears went up 39-32. A three pointer by Raheem Smith (Greenville, NC) and two free throws changed 44-34 by the Bears. The Bears moved the ball well around the court and bridged the gap 48-35 at the 15:18 mark; the first biggest lead of the game by the Bears. Rodney Callwood (Hempstead, NY) lit up the court with free throws and a jumper that sent the Bears further ahead 55-39 at the 11:59 mark of the game. A brief stop in the game by officials assessed a double foul that was called on Mike Smith (Bronx, NY) of the Bears and Santonia Springs of the Blue Bears.
Play making by Graham and Smith continued the momentum for the Bears. Moving the ball around the floor seemed effortless and a three pointer by Graham sent the score up 64-45 for the Bears. John Dourous (Fuquay-Varina, NC) tossed in a beautiful three pointer with one second on the 30 second clock and with just under four minutes in the game, the Bears went up 69-47. RALEIGH - You can go home
again. Cleo Hill Jr. has made his way back to Shaw after six years. Hill was an assistant men's basketball coach at Shaw from 2000-2002, the same year the Bears won their only CIAA title and an NCAA Final Four appearance.
Hill said he and his coaching staff started preseason workouts with the team for preparation of the upcoming season.
"Definitely, the administration has changed," said Hill, noting the differences since he was last here. "I think President Newsome and Dr. Perry are doing a great job, so those are new faces that have got here the year I was leaving. After that, it seems that everyone has been winning championships."
In recent years, the women's basketball, football, baseball and bowling teams have brought championships to Shaw. Hill said his expectations for the men's basketball season are the same as any other coach's. He hopes to bring home a division title first and a conference championship second.
Although his recruiting strategy may be different from others, Hill said he and his staff calculate everything. "We made a decision to win now," he said, referring to his strategy to recruit junior college and Division I transfers. Coming off of winning the academic achievement honor of a 2.7 grade point average as a team at Cheyney, Hill said he hopes to meet that goal at Shaw or even higher. "I am trying to teach my guys to compete in all aspects in life and academically is one of them," he said.
Hill said he plans to build a foundation of study hall, tutors, and a daily regiment of practice, eating and film sessions. He is not sure if team members will be required "to maintain anything higher than what the NCAA does...," but they will be discussing ways to help the team compete academically and be the best players they can be.
The Bears open their season Nov. 15 at the University of Montevallo for the Coca-Cola Classic.
