Miami Dolphins Sign Louis “Big Lou” Ellis as Free Agent

Raleigh, NC – (May 1, 2009) Louis Ellis (SR/6’3/312/Jackson, MS) a member of the 2008 and 2007 CIAA Champions of Shaw University, has signed a multi-year contract with the Miami Dolphins as a free agent.  He will wear jersey #93; he wore #92 while at Shaw.  Dominating for two seasons in the Conference under Head Coach Darrell Asberry, he said, “This is truly a dream come true for me. My family is so happy and I am thankful to God for this lifetime opportunity.”

He signed on as a nose tackle; a position that the Dolphins organization has a great need for.  Because the Dolphins didn’t take the opportunity to draft any defensive positions, Ellis is the only nose tackle added to the roster.  Regarding this opportunity for his premier player Asberry stated, “My coaching staff and the team are extremely proud of Louis.  If Bill Parcels believes that he is qualified to play with the Miami Dolphins, one of the higher brass teams in the NFL, then that speaks volumes to the quality and caliber of player that he is.  Because he was signed to a multi-year deal, it suggests that they are trying to tie him up.  We are excited and look forward to seeing Big Lou wear #93 versus his irreplaceable #92 on Sunday evenings on national television.”

Ellis received the University’s highest athletic honor for student-athletes as he received the 2009 Athletic Director’s Award as the Male Student-Athlete of the Year; chosen by a compilation of votes by the coaching staff.  He is the 2008 and 2007 CIAA Defensive Player of the Year for. He is a 2008 SBN/Black College All-American and D2Football.com All-American who ranks number one in the CIAA conference in tackles for loss (17 solo/8 assisted).  Ellis comes in second in the conference for sacks with 8 (.80avg/g) and is also credited with 60 total tackles. He was chosen as a member of the 2008 Daktronics Division II All-Super Region 1 Football Team; also named to the First Team Defense and tied as the top vote recipient for defensive linemen.  He was selected to the 2008 Boxtorow.com/BASN All-American TeamHe was chosen as a nominee for the HSRN 2008 Player of the Year Award and the 2008 Gene Upshaw Division II Lineman of the Year Award.  Ellis received the 100% Wrong Club 2009 and 2008 CIAA Defensive Player of the Year.  He was chosen to receive the Pigskin Club of Washington James Guy “Pete” Tyson 2009 CIAA Player of the Year Award for the second straight year.

The Shaw Family is proud of this incredibly bright star; our son and now, Miami Dolphin!  Louis Ellis has truly taken “Strides to Excellence; Only the Best” and stamped it across his personal and professional heart!

Shaw Bears are 2008 CIAA Champions!

Back 2 Back Win First in School History

Raleigh, NC - (November 8, 2008) The Shaw University Bears (8-3, 6-1) are the 2008 CIAA Champions after destroying the Vikings of Elizabeth City State University 36-7.   In a week of phenomenal history, the Bears have made their own by winning the championship title back to back; a first in school history.  Darrell Asberry, Head Coach of the Bears tagged the theme "Make History or Be History!" to his team at the onset of the 2008 season.  The challenge has been answered; the Bears have MADE HISTORY!

Sending a personal statement to the Vikings, the Bears came out and manhandled their opponent with a defensive thrashing by the nation's number one ranked Division II defense holding the Vikings to 238 total offense yards.  Following a series of missed scoring opportunities for both teams, the Bears put up the first score of the game with a 22 yard field goal by Caleb Reid with 2:48 in the first quarter and went ahead 3-0.  Tyrone Bolden barreled in for the first touchdown of the game with a 24 yard pass from Travis Robinson.  After the PAT by Reid, the Bears broadened their lead to 10-0.

With 14:02 on the clock in the second quarter, Dexter Manley ran in the first touchdown for the Vikings with a 28 yard pass from Curtis Rich.  Andrew Hening added the extra point and the Vikings were on the board 10-7.  Following the 56 yard field goal last week against JCSU, Lincoln Shepherd continued his outstanding performance with a 43 yard field goal sending the Bears further ahead 13-7 at the half.

The third quarter got underway and Lenell King wasted no time snatching the ball out of the air with one hand and scored on a 48 yard pass from Robinson.  Reid's attempted PAT was blocked but the Bears bridge continued to stretch 19-7.  Reid continued to mount stats with a successful 27 yard field goal with 6:29 left in the quarter; 22-7 for the Bears.  Aaron Ellison scored on a two yard run and Reid kicked the extra point and the Bears went up 29-7.

The championship title was fifteen minutes away.  With the clock ticking, James Petway drove in the last touchdown of the game on a 21 yard pass from Robinson and Reid finished the play with the extra point.  VICTORY.  The Bears claimed the second straight crown with a final score of 36-7.  After six catches in the game, King totaled 87 yards and one touchdown; the longest at 48 yards. Robinson threw three touchdown passes for 209 yards with the longest at 48 yards.  Raymond Williams rushed for 96 yards and Ellison rushed for 90; a dynamic performance by the duo.  Playing with drive and determination on the field and continuously motivating his team on the sideline, Williams received the 2008 CIAA MVP Award for the Bears.

The Bears defense proved why they are the force to be reckoned with.  In his best performance of the season, John Smith led with 8 tackles (5 solo and 3 assisted) and 1.5 sacks.  LaMichael Howell made seven tackles (5 solo and 2 assisted).  Gerard Jones made six tackles (3 solo and three assisted) and one key interception.  Jon Huddleston had six tackles (three solo and three assisted); Liddon Levine had six tackles (1 solo and 5 assisted); Monte Coleman had five tackles (3 solo and 2 assisted); and Dwayne Moss had five tackles (2 solo and three assisted).  The defense totaled 33 solo tackles, 42 assisted with four sacks, stopping the advance of the Tigers offense.

Following the win Asberry stated, "This is our house and we defended our title; we have nothing left to prove.  We are the 2008 CIAA Champions!"  He dedicated the championship trophy to Dr. Clarence G. Newsome, President and Attorney Willie E. Gary, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Shaw University.  Newsome stated, "We won like champions. We are the champions!"

The Shaw Family congratulates the Bears for an incredible season and the successful back to back championship title!

2008 Championship Reflection: Shaw's Son, Alexander Self Still in the Game

Raleigh, NC - (November 8, 2008) The 2008 CIAA Championship title is in the record books for the Shaw University Bears.  This is a feat that allowed history to come to the first historically black college of the South.

For a while in the game today, all of this seemed insignificant as one of our very own lie on the field in uncertainty following a play when injury left him there.  Alexander Self (FR/6'3/285/DL/Greenwood Springs, LA) was conscious, able to move his extremities and speak, but following a hard hit in the game versus ECSU, he was on his way to the hospital to be checked.  The sidelines from both teams as well as the crowd fell quiet with concern and in their silence, a unified prayer was felt in the stadium as a covering over this beautiful young man.  The look of concern in his eyes will never leave the impression laid on the hearts of us standing over him on the field as we tried to reassure him that all would be well medically and mentally.

Darrell Asberry, his Head Coach wiped away tears from his eyes; his teammates kneeled in prayer; ECSU kneeled in prayer and once the emergency personnel worked to get him in the ambulance, a signal from the field led the reassurance that Alexander needed to hear from them.  The crowd stood and cheered, clapped and cheered him right off of the field.  His teammates hollered to him that they would finish it for him and await his return to the field.  "We're waiting on you A.  You'll be fine.  We've got your back."  At that moment, we trusted that God would certainly prevail through grace and allow the future of this beautiful young man to continue to burn brightly.  The heart of this Shaw University champion beat strongly in a resolve of strength, fortitude and a strong thirst for more of what life has to offer and playing Shaw football.  God heard our prayers and those of his family and we knew that He would answer them.

Through grace and mercy, Alexander was released from the hospital; God blessed him and answered our prayers. Despite the site of seeing him on the field, he remains healthy without ANY life changing or threatening injury.  Excuse this writer as I tearfully submit to you that Alexander has been given a charge in his life to complete great things that are yet to be achieved.  The greatest gift for today is knowing that our son, brother, teammate and fellow Shaw Family member is still standing.  He is a champion but more importantly, he is our beloved.  Please keep him in your prayers.  The best for Alexander is certainly yet to come.  In His name!

Texas Southern rallied back after they got the ball and went on to kick a 24 yard field goal that put them on the scoreboard 3-10.   With 12:36 into the second quarter, Shepherd kicked a 38 yard field goal to put Shaw up 13-3.  The Bears fumbled the ball with 10:06 on the clock.  TSU recovered the fumble and ran for 29 yards to a touchdown sending their score to 10-13.  Shaw kicked a 28 yard field goal to add three points to the score sending Shaw up 10-16.  With 5:36 in the second quarter, Bobby Reid of TSU ran two yards for the touchdown sending them ahead for the first time of the game 17-16.  Just before halftime, DeAndre Okanji caught a 35 yard pass from quarterback Marcus Brooks that made the score 22-17.  The extra point failed by Shepherd and at the half the score was 17-22 in favor of the Bears.

At the beginning of the third quarter, TSU kicked a 28 yard field goal that sent the score to 20-22.  Shaw then scored with the efforts of Wooten’s 16 yard run, sending the score 20-29 in favor of the Bears.  TSU came right back with an eight yard run by Lucas Caparelli for the touchdown with 7:07 in the third quarter.  Well into the quarter, Roland Robins scored on a touchdown from Reid and they failed on a two point conversion making the score 33-29 in favor of TSU.  Just before the quarter ended, Reid scored on a four yard run and Robert Hersh kicked the extra point sending them to the final winning score 40-29.

After a valiant attempt to rally back, Shaw never recovered in the last quarter and the Bears suffered a heartbreaking loss out on the west coast.  Darrell Asberry, Head Coach of Shaw University stated, “There are two things that we have to work on; finishing the game and remaining disciplined.  We shot ourselves in the foot with penalties but we played well tonight in light of the final score.  We started this way last year so I am not going to push the panic button.  Our team will go home next week and start to defend our title in the conference.  Keep your heads up because at the beginning and end of every day, we are family.”

With a journey that began for members of the Shaw Family aboard several Southwest flights to Sacramento on 9/11, the Bears still have what remains the most precious, memorable and important in this series of events in the inaugural Capital City Classic; each other.  We remember the families and victims of that tragic day seven years ago and we honor them.  In light of defeat on the field and a bit of disappointment, we also honor and respect the personal commitments and the traditions of our Shaw Family.

The Bears will play Lincoln University at Durham County Memorial Stadium on Saturday, September 20th at 4:00 p.m.
