Miami Dolphins Sign Louis “Big Lou” Ellis as Free Agent

Raleigh, NC – (May 1, 2009) Louis Ellis (SR/6’3/312/Jackson, MS) a member of the 2008 and 2007 CIAA Champions of Shaw University, has signed a multi-year contract with the Miami Dolphins as a free agent. He will wear jersey #93; he wore #92 while at Shaw. Dominating for two seasons in the Conference under Head Coach Darrell Asberry, he said, “This is truly a dream come true for me. My family is so happy and I am thankful to God for this lifetime opportunity.”
He signed on as a nose tackle; a position that the Dolphins organization has a great need for. Because the Dolphins didn’t take the opportunity to draft any defensive positions, Ellis is the only nose tackle added to the roster. Regarding this opportunity for his premier player Asberry stated, “My coaching staff and the team are extremely proud of Louis. If Bill Parcels believes that he is qualified to play with the Miami Dolphins, one of the higher brass teams in the NFL, then that speaks volumes to the quality and caliber of player that he is. Because he was signed to a multi-year deal, it suggests that they are trying to tie him up. We are excited and look forward to seeing Big Lou wear #93 versus his irreplaceable #92 on Sunday evenings on national television.”
Ellis received the University’s highest athletic honor for student-athletes as he received the 2009 Athletic Director’s Award as the Male Student-Athlete of the Year; chosen by a compilation of votes by the coaching staff. He is the 2008 and 2007 CIAA Defensive Player of the Year for. He is a 2008 SBN/Black College All-American and D2Football.com All-American who ranks number one in the CIAA conference in tackles for loss (17 solo/8 assisted). Ellis comes in second in the conference for sacks with 8 (.80avg/g) and is also credited with 60 total tackles. He was chosen as a member of the 2008 Daktronics Division II All-Super Region 1 Football Team; also named to the First Team Defense and tied as the top vote recipient for defensive linemen. He was selected to the 2008 Boxtorow.com/BASN All-American Team. He was chosen as a nominee for the HSRN 2008 Player of the Year Award and the 2008 Gene Upshaw Division II Lineman of the Year Award. Ellis received the 100% Wrong Club 2009 and 2008 CIAA Defensive Player of the Year. He was chosen to receive the Pigskin Club of Washington James Guy “Pete” Tyson 2009 CIAA Player of the Year Award for the second straight year.
The Shaw Family is proud of this incredibly bright star; our son and now, Miami Dolphin! Louis Ellis has truly taken “Strides to Excellence; Only the Best” and stamped it across his personal and professional heart!

Shaw Bears are 2008 CIAA Champions!
Back 2 Back Win First in School History
Raleigh, NC - (November 8, 2008) The Shaw University Bears (8-3, 6-1) are the 2008 CIAA Champions after destroying the Vikings of Elizabeth City State University 36-7. In a week of phenomenal history, the Bears have made their own by winning the championship title back to back; a first in school history. Darrell Asberry, Head Coach of the Bears tagged the theme "Make History or Be History!" to his team at the onset of the 2008 season. The challenge has been answered; the Bears have MADE HISTORY!
Sending a personal statement to the Vikings, the Bears came out and manhandled their opponent with a defensive thrashing by the nation's number one ranked Division II defense holding the Vikings to 238 total offense yards. Following a series of missed scoring opportunities for both teams, the Bears put up the first score of the game with a 22 yard field goal by Caleb Reid with 2:48 in the first quarter and went ahead 3-0. Tyrone Bolden barreled in for the first touchdown of the game with a 24 yard pass from Travis Robinson. After the PAT by Reid, the Bears broadened their lead to 10-0.
With 14:02 on the clock in the second quarter, Dexter Manley ran in the first touchdown for the Vikings with a 28 yard pass from Curtis Rich. Andrew Hening added the extra point and the Vikings were on the board 10-7. Following the 56 yard field goal last week against JCSU, Lincoln Shepherd continued his outstanding performance with a 43 yard field goal sending the Bears further ahead 13-7 at the half.
The third quarter got underway and Lenell King wasted no time snatching the ball out of the air with one hand and scored on a 48 yard pass from Robinson. Reid's attempted PAT was blocked but the Bears bridge continued to stretch 19-7. Reid continued to mount stats with a successful 27 yard field goal with 6:29 left in the quarter; 22-7 for the Bears. Aaron Ellison scored on a two yard run and Reid kicked the extra point and the Bears went up 29-7.
The championship title was fifteen minutes away. With the clock ticking, James Petway drove in the last touchdown of the game on a 21 yard pass from Robinson and Reid finished the play with the extra point. VICTORY. The Bears claimed the second straight crown with a final score of 36-7. After six catches in the game, King totaled 87 yards and one touchdown; the longest at 48 yards. Robinson threw three touchdown passes for 209 yards with the longest at 48 yards. Raymond Williams rushed for 96 yards and Ellison rushed for 90; a dynamic performance by the duo. Playing with drive and determination on the field and continuously motivating his team on the sideline, Williams received the 2008 CIAA MVP Award for the Bears.
The Bears defense proved why they are the force to be reckoned with. In his best performance of the season, John Smith led with 8 tackles (5 solo and 3 assisted) and 1.5 sacks. LaMichael Howell made seven tackles (5 solo and 2 assisted). Gerard Jones made six tackles (3 solo and three assisted) and one key interception. Jon Huddleston had six tackles (three solo and three assisted); Liddon Levine had six tackles (1 solo and 5 assisted); Monte Coleman had five tackles (3 solo and 2 assisted); and Dwayne Moss had five tackles (2 solo and three assisted). The defense totaled 33 solo tackles, 42 assisted with four sacks, stopping the advance of the Tigers offense.
Following the win Asberry stated, "This is our house and we defended our title; we have nothing left to prove. We are the 2008 CIAA Champions!" He dedicated the championship trophy to Dr. Clarence G. Newsome, President and Attorney Willie E. Gary, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Shaw University. Newsome stated, "We won like champions. We are the champions!"
The Shaw Family congratulates the Bears for an incredible season and the successful back to back championship title!

FOOTBALL: Asberry Named CIAA Coach of the Week
Raleigh, NC – (November 3, 2008) Darrell Asberry, Head Coach of the Shaw University football program has been named the CIAA Coach of the Week. Asberry led his 2008 team to repeat as CIAA Western Division Champions with the 62-35 win over JCSU on November 1st. This is no small feat as the Bears made school history with this first back to back division title. They also made history by becoming the first Shaw team to be able to defend their CIAA Championship title back to back. With only one conference loss this season, the Bears finished the regular season (7-3 overall, 6-1 conference).
This was a well deserved finish as the Bears exploded across the NCAA Division II polls this week. The Bears are ranked number two in Pass Sacks: (9 games/ 38.0 yds/ 323 yds/ 4.22 pg). Louis Ellis (SR/DB/315/Jackson, MS) is ranked number two in Tackles for Loss: (16 solo/ 6 assisted/ 95 yds/ 19 total/ 2.11 PG).
The Bears have earned their way into the championship round and are excited that the opportunity is before them. Asberry said, “This Western Division Championship is great for our program. We have a fine group of dedicated and committed young men who go at each game full blast with the biggest hearts in the CIAA. We deserve to play for a back to back championship. We have successfully defended our conference title and now we will go into the game next Saturday defending our Conference Championship. We decided early on that we would “Make History or Be History!” and now we have “MADE HISTORY!”
The Shaw Family congratulates and salutes Coach Asberry for this deserved accomplishment. The Bears will take on ECSU at Durham County Memorial Stadium on November 8th at 1:00 p.m. for the 2008 CIAA Championship.

Charlotte, NC - (November 1, 2008) HISTORY! VICTORY! The Shaw University Bears made school history by becoming the first back to back CIAA Western Division Champions after crushing Johnson C. Smith University 62-35 at the Irwin Belk Complex.
Immediately in the first quarter at the 13:05 mark, the Bears made their first stake on the conference title with a 33 yard touchdown run by Aaron "Train Wreck" Ellison. Caleb Reid scored the PAT and Shaw was on the board 7-0. Ellison revved up again and ran a powerful 25 yard touchdown and Reid scored the extra point. The Bears were making a personal statement and the score went up 14-0. The first quarter ended on a five yard run by Raymond Williams and a successful extra point by Reid. With a score of 21-0, the Bears were mounting their lead and feeling the reality of a back to back CIAA championship run.
The second quarter started with a 15 yard touchdown on a pass from Carl Richardson. Julius Wright kicked the PAT and the Golden Bulls were on the board 21-7. Answering back, the Bears scored on a 26 yard field goal by Reid and with 10:26 on the score clock, the Bears went up 24-7. Julius "All Purpose" Gregory put up a touchdown on a seven yard pass from Travis Robinson and Reid kicked the PAT for a 31-7 lead. The Golden Bulls worked to answer back with a 60 yard touchdown run by Markus Gray from Richardson. With 3:29 on the clock, the score changed to 31-14. The momentum continued for the Golden Bulls as Joshua Battle scored on a 28 yard pass from Richardson and the extra point by Wright. The score inched closer 31-21. Lincoln “Green Shoes” Shepherd added a 56 yard field goal to end the first half scoring at 34-31 for the Bears.
The second half was underway and Gregory ran in a 12 yard pass from Robinson. Reid scored the PAT and the Bears quickly went up 41-21. Answering back, JCSU scored on an eight yard run by Ryan Carter and the extra point by Wright. The score was 41-28. Robert “Mr. Excitement” Brown looked like the 2007 #1 NCAA Division II Punt Returner by scoring on a 97 kickoff return. Reid continued his success with the extra PAT and Shaw broadened the lead 48-28. With 1:45 left in the third quarter, Franklin ran in a three yard pass from Carter and Wright kicked in the extra point for a score of 48-35. This would be the last score from the Golden Bulls.

We shot ourselves in the foot with penalties but we played well tonight in light of the final score. We started this way last year so I am not going to push the panic button. Our team will go home next week and start to defend our title in the conference. Keep your heads up because at the beginning and end of every day, we are family.”
With a journey that began for members of the Shaw Family aboard several Southwest flights to Sacramento on 9/11, the Bears still have what remains the most precious, memorable and important in this series of events in the inaugural Capital City Classic; each other. We remember the families and victims of that tragic day seven years ago and we honor them. In light of defeat on the field and a bit of disappointment, we also honor and respect the personal commitments and the traditions of our Shaw Family.
The Bears will play Lincoln University at Durham County Memorial Stadium on Saturday, September 20th at 4:00 p.m.
