SHAW’S FOOTBALL SPRING SCRIMMAGE
SHINES THROUGH THE RAIN

April 5, 2008 Raleigh, NC The Shaw University Football program withstood the mud and the rain to take to the athletic gridiron at Hillside High School today in Durham, NC. Shaw showcased a stimulating mix of talent from returning players and new additions to the team. The 2007 CIAA Champions operated in a modified atmosphere that displayed a sneak preview of offensive and defensive schemes while, most importantly, educating the student-athletes on prevention of injury.

 

The Shaw University Bears will begin play on August 30th against Albany State University in Albany, Georgia. The out-of-conference competition is scheduled to start at 7:00 p.m.

January 2008  – Shaw Football’s #92 Louis Ellis (Defensive Lineman / Junior / Recreation / Jackson, MS) is once again being hoisted onto the “honor podium” as he was recently named to the 2007 D2Football.com All-America Second Team. Ellis joins an elite class of student-athletes that have been honored by the well-known organization since its induction in 2000. Furthermore, Ellis’ stellar performance has positioned Shaw University as one of 54 schools represented and as one of only three CIAA institutions with student-athletes selected. More

January 15, 2008Washington, DC –The Pigskin Club of Washington, DC has selected Shaw University Football’s Head Coach Darrell Asberry as their 2007 CIAA Coach of the Year and  Louis Ellis (#92 / Defensive Lineman / Junior / Recreation / Jackson, MS) has been chosen as the 2007 CIAA Player of the Year. More

November 10, 2007 - Charlotte, NC - The #12 Shaw University Bears traveled approximately 175 miles to American Legion Memorial Stadium to challenge the #8 Panthers of Virginia Union University for title and rights to the CIAA Football Championship. Despite starting the game as the "undisputed declared underdogs," the Bears had a streaming supply of an unwavering will to win pumped into both ventricles of their solar eclipse size heart to bypass the Panthers with a 31 - 24 double overtime triumph. November 5, 2007 Hampton, VA – The Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) has recently released its Players of the Week for the conclusion of play in week eleven. Shaw University’s Ryne Powell (#39 / Kicker / Junior / History / Brown Summit, NC) was voted as the Specialty Player of the Week. Powell’s prestigious honor stems from his performance in Shaw’s season finale against their cross-town rivals in which he sealed the Bears’ 17 – 3 triumph over Saint Augustine’s with a 45 yard field goal. His three points were the only points scored in the second half. More

November 3, 2007 - Durham, NC - The Shaw University Bears are now the undisputed top team in the western division and have EARNED an all-star pass to play in 2007 CIAA Football Championship held next weekend in the Queen City. The Bears country cooked their cross-town rivals for a 17 - 3 victory. This win serves as a momentous memory in Shaw's athletic history as it was the first time ever Shaw defeated the Falcons since the Bears inaugural season of play and marks the second time the Bears have advanced to the championship circle in the football program's four year existence.

November 1, 2007 North Aurora, IL – The Bear’s Oliver Pazdry (#74 / Offensive Lineman / 6 – 4 / 310 lbs / Junior / Business Administration) can add another career highlight to his statistical profile. Pazdry was chosen as one of 15 players honored as a NCAA Division II National Player of the Week for the week ending October 29, 2007. October 31, 2007 - The Shaw University Bears have competed vigorously and with high intensity in their quest to secure a change to appear in the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association's (CIAA) Championship circle. Currently, the Bears hold the top spot in the Western Division with a record of 6 -3 Overall, 5 - 1 CIAA, and 2 - 1 Division. Recently, the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) released its Division II Football National Ranking Summary with Shaw University listed as the National Leader in Defense. More

Shaw Spoils Bowie’s Homecoming Bash

 

October 27, 2007Bowie, MD – The western division’s number two seeded Shaw University Bears bussed to Bulldog Stadium to battle the eastern division’s fourth seeded Bowie State University Bulldogs. Despite being assessed 12 penalties for 141 yards loss, Shaw succeeded in the Bear-Bulldog brawl for a 16 – 14 triumph. Shaw’s record advances to 6 – 3 Overall, 5 – 1 CIAA, and 3 – 1 Division. More



SHAW’S VEHICLE OF SUCCESS DELAYED AT FAYETTEVILLE

 

October 20, 2007 – Fayetteville, NC The Shaw University Bears visited their western division foe; the Broncos of Fayetteville State University. The first place Bears were only nine points away from re-writing CIAA history to win their division at an earlier week than any divisional winner. Sadly, Shaw was upset with a loss to FSU 24 – 16. Shaw remains as the first place team in the western division with a record of 5 – 3 Overall, 4 – 1 CIAA, and 2 – 1 Division. More

Bears Only Team in CIAA Still Undefeated in Conference Play

 

October 13, 2007 – Durham, NC – The Shaw University Bears tracked to Durham County Stadium for their third home game against the Blue Bears of Livingstone College. Shaw added huge hype to the Homecoming celebration by rolling over Livingstone 35 – 7. The Bears executed on offense and defense with stellar performance as the offense totaled 402 yards and the defense pawed the Blue Bears to only accumulate only 52 yards total offense. Shaw continues on with a four game winning streak. Shaw stands strong at a perfect 4 – 0 in the western division and as the only current CIAA collegiate crew to be unbeaten in conference competition. Lawrenceville, VA – Second year Head Coach Darrell Asberry piloted his Shaw University Bears to Russell Athletic Field to play the Tigers of Saint Paul’s College. The Bears silenced the shouts of returning SPC alumni and put a picket fence around their first place position in the CIAA’s Western Division with a 26 – 9 triumph over the Tigers. Shaw stretches their winning streak to three games as they deservingly escort a record of 4 – 2 Overall, 3 – 0 CIAA, and 1 – 0 Division. More

 

 

Shaw’s Defense Helps Bears to a 24-7 Victory Over Miles

 

Fairfield, AL – The Bears of Shaw University (1-0) start their 2007 football campaign on the road with a 24-7 victory over the Golden Bears of Miles College (0-1). Despite a cloudy and rainy day, the Bears were still able to get things moving in their favor as they got warmed up in the second quarter. More

McGeorge enters second year at the school

RALEIGH, NC - Rich McGeorge climbed a narrow stairwell at Shaw Football House on Person Street and settled into a small office.

 

Two computers, a telephone, an empty soft-drink bottle and a family picture sat on his desk. In one corner, a fan whirred, creating a soft breeze that symbolized the winds of change.

 

Nowhere was there evidence of McGeorge's distinguished past, which included nine years as a Green Bay Packers tight end, two All-America seasons at Elon University and assistant coaching stints with the Miami Dolphins, the University of Florida and Duke. More
 

 

Shaw Football Predicted to Finish Fourth in CIAA West


PETERSBURG, VA (July 26, 2007) - The Shaw University football team under the direction of second year head coach Darrell Asberry, is predicted to finish fourth in the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Western Division as selected by the league's coaches.  The Bears finished the 2006 campaign with a 3-7 overall record and a fourth place finish in the Eastern Division. Rocky Mount, NC - On Wednesday, July 18 at 11:00 am the City of Rocky Mount will hold its annual press conference for the 10th Annual Down East Viking Football Classic. The classic will feature of the host Vikings of Elizabeth City State University and the Bears of Shaw University. Shaw Football Program Announces New Venue

 

Raleigh, NC – (May 9, 2007) Shaw University is taking athletic programming to another level.  The University is excited to announce that the Shaw football program will play the 2007-2008 season in the Durham County Stadium located at 2700 Stadium Drive in Durham, NC.  Sitting on more than 31 acres, the 8,500 seat Stadium is the ideal venue for kickoff of the first home game of the 2007 season on September 15th against Morehouse University at 1:00 p.m. More
