Despite Strong First Half, Shaw Falls to #12 Rollins 76-58
(Winter Park, FL) – Shaw stayed close with the nation’s number 12 team,
Rollins, but suffered a shooting slump late in the second half and lost
76-58 in the Winter Park Tangerine Tournament. Shaw (5-3, 4-0 in the CIAA) had strong performances from Rodney Callwood (left) with 21 points and seven rebounds, and Brit Kelly who added another 15 points for the Bears. Rollins (9-1) had a hard time shaking off the Bears early in the game, but never panicked and took advantage when Shaw made a misstep, scoring 23 points off of turnovers. In the first half, Shaw had managed to build a 19-15 lead in 12 minutes, but the Tars scored 11 unanswered points, taking a 26-19 lead with 4:55 left in the half. While Shaw did manage to cut the lead to one, Rollins scored a basket and two free throws in the last 45 seconds to hold a five-point halftime lead. The Tars quickly ran their lead into double digits in the second half, taking a 48-38 lead on an Ian Scott jumper with 14:04 left in the game. Down 54-42 with 10:42 to play, the Bears scrambled to cut the lead to five over the next three minutes on three buckets by Callwood and two by Kelly. Eric Pitts hit a bucket and a free throw for the Bears with 6:03 left in the game, but other than an Adrian Bascom free throw, the Bears did not score again until there were 30 seconds left in the game. That bucket put the score at 76-58 – the final tally. Callwood’s 21 led both teams in scoring. Raheem Smith led the Bears with four assists. For the Tars, Nick Wolf had 20 points and Myk Brown had 18. Matt Robertson had ten rebounds. Wolf led Rollins with five assists. The Bears now take on University of Massachusetts-Lowell, who were defeated by Clayton State 82-60 earlier in the afternoon.
