Shaw Dominates Fayetteville State 75-51
Shaw (14-12, 11-8 CIAA) shot 51.2 percent on the night, compared to 27.7 percent for Fayetteville State (7-17, 4-14 CIAA). The Bears also hit 87.9 percent from the line.
Rodney Callwood (left) led both teams with 22 points, including 13 of 14 from the free throw line.
The Broncos took the 2-0 lead out of the gate on two Michael Carpenter free throws, but it was their only lead.
Shaw built a ten-point lead with 13:05 left in the first on Michael Smith’s rebound and layup. The Broncos would get as close as five, when Paul Lane hit a pair of free throws with 2:38 on the clock.
The Bears went into the locker room at the half with a 32-23 lead.
Raheem Smith opened the scoring for the Bears in the second, with a three that gave them a 12-point lead. The Broncos cut it to eight with 16:15 left in the game. FSU couldn’t pull within double digits again in the game.
With 11:25 left, Callwood hit a layup to put the score at 54-33, and the Broncos could not cut the lead below 20 for the rest of the game.
Smith had 11 points for the Bears, while Darryl Johnson had ten. Johnson led the Bears with 5 rebounds.
Carpenter had nine points to lead the Broncos. Jarmel Baxter had six rebounds.
The Bears close out their regular season Saturday against Chowan at 7:30. Before the game, Shaw will honor the seniors on the team.
