Poor Shooting Sends Shaw To Defeat Against Saint Augustine’s 67-48
The loss is Shaw’s third in a row and gives them a 10-9 mark on the season, 7-5 in the CIAA and 0-2 in the Western Division. Saint Augustine’s is now 16-3 overall, 10-2 in the conference and 2-0 within the Division. The Bears couldn’t find their stroke from anywhere on the court, shooting 29.3% from the floor, 14.3% from the three-point line and only 55% at the foul line. Shaw shot 14 more baskets than Saint Augustine’s, but hit two fewer. The real difference came at the three-point line, where the Falcons went six for ten, while the Bears hit only three for 21. The Falcons built a strong lead midway through the first half, which was challenged on a 6-0 run by the Bears. With 7:09 left in the period, Shaw’s Brandon Simms hit a three to cut the Saint Augustine’s lead to three. The Falcons then went on a 12-2 run, building a 13-point lead. They went into the locker room with a 33-20 advantage at the half. Saint Augustine’s opened the second half much as they had closed the first – taking a 16-point lead on Steven Brignol’s three pointer with 16:36 left in the game. But over the next five minutes, the Bears outscored the Falcons 13-2, cutting the lead to five on Adrian Bascom’s layup and free throw shot. The Bears would not score again for five minutes, when Rodney Callwood’s dunk broke the scoring drought and put the Saint Augustine’s lead at 51-40 with five minutes to go. The Falcons methodically built their lead well into double digits, and with 32 seconds left, Jeremy Banks’ two free throw shots gave the Falcons their final 19-point lead, 67-48. Darryl Johnson led the Bears with nine points and seven rebounds. Brignol led the Falcons with 18 points and Brandon Hickson had ten. The Bears travel to Johnson C. Smith on Thursday for a 7:30 game. They return home Monday, February 8 against Livingstone at 7:30. Picture: Brandon Simms hits a jumper in the first half. He had eight points on the night.
