Late Scoring Surge Pushes Shaw Past Chowan 83-73 In Overtime

(Murfreesboro, NC) – Shaw University scored 27 points in the last six and a half minutes against Chowan University, roaring past the Hawks for a 83-73 overtime win. 

With 1:44 left in regulation, Chowan’s Mark Brown hit a three pointer that gave the Hawks (13-6, 9-4 CIAA) a 62-56 lead over Shaw (11-10, 8-6 CIAA).  Over that last 104 seconds, the two teams ran off 20 points. 

In just over a minute, the Bears tied the score at 64, with critical treys from Raheem Smith and Britain Kelly.   Lando Morrison scored five points for the Hawks, countered by two free throws from Smith, to give the Hawks a 69-66 lead in the waning seconds of the game. 

With six seconds on the clock, Smith drained a three, sending the game into overtime. 

Shaw’s Michael Smith scored four points in the opening minute of overtime to give the Bears a 73-69 lead.  Chowan cut it to two, but the Bears scored the next six points, forcing the Hawks to foul in order to stop the clock. 

The Bears scored 14 points in overtime, 10 from the charity stripe.  For the game, Shaw shot an impressive 20 for 22 (90.9 percent) from the line.  Chowan hurt itself at the line, hitting only 26 of 38 (68.4 percent) free throws. 

Rodney Callwood led the Bears with 25 points while Raheem Smith hit for 21, 15 from the three-point line.  Michael Smith had 14 points.  Raheem and Michael Smith each had five assists.  Darryl Johnson led the Bears with seven rebounds. 

For Chowan, Morrison led the way with 25 points, while Jaleel Nelson hit for 19.  Nelson led the Hawks in rebounds with nine, and assists with four. 

The Bears return home Monday for a game against Livingstone College at 7:30 p.m.
