Shaw Can’t Overcome Slow Start – Drops Game to Montevallo 99-89
Loss Follows 70-64 Defeat at the Hands of West Alabama
(MONTEVALLO, AL) – Michael Smith had 21 and Rodney Callwood 19, but Shaw couldn’t overcome a poor first half, and fell to undefeated Montevallo 99-89. Montevallo rushed to a 55-28 lead at the half, partly from an outstanding eight for 11 shooting from the three-point line.
In the second half, the Bears got the hot hand, shooting 60 percent from the three-point line and over 64 percent overall, allowing them to outscore Montevallo 61-44.
Darryl Johnson and Glenn Batemon were also in double figures for the Bears with 12 points each. Johnson led Shaw in rebounds with nine.
The win is Montevallo’s seventh on the year, while the Bears fall to 4-2 (4-0 in the CIAA) after opening the season with four straight wins.
The previous night, Shaw again allowed their opponent - West Alabama - to take a large lead, but fought back, closing to six for a 70-64 loss. Rodney Callwood led the Bears with 13 points, while Michael Smith had ten. [West Alabama box score]
