Raheem Smith and Michael Smith Lead Shaw Over Clayton State 68-64 (Morrow, GA) – Raheem Smith had 21 points and Michael Smith 19 to lead Shaw past Clayton State 68-64. Clayton State (4-4) took an early lead, but Shaw (5-2) never let them get more than five points ahead. With 5:39 left in the first half, Michael Smith hit a layup that gave the Bears a 14-13 lead – a lead they never relinquished. The Bears built the advantage to 12 with 8:27 left in the game, but the Lakers fought back, cutting to lead to two twice in the last 19 seconds of the game. Michael Smith hit four free throws in that stretch to cement the 68-64 win. Raheem Smith played every minute of the game on the way to his 21 points. He also had six rebounds on the night. Michael Smith led the Bears with five assists in addition to his 19 points. Rodney Callwood had 14 points and six rebounds as well for the Bears. Robert Murry had 20 points to lead Clayton State. Armon Jones led the Lakers with eight rebounds, and Timothy Downs had seven assists. The Bears travel to Winter Park, FL for the Winter Park Rotary Tangerine Tournament December 29 and 30. Their opening round game is at 5:00 p.m. against Rollins College. Clayton State will face UMass-Lowell in the opening game. December 18, 2009
