Shaw Picked to Finish Second in the CIAA by D2Football.com Markus McElveen Named to Pre-season All-CIAA Team
“It’s time to play the games,” said Bears Head Coach Darrell Asberry. “The recognition is nice, but it is time for us to go out and prove where we belong.”
D2Football.com picked the Bears - reigning back-to-back CIAA champions - to finish behind Division rival Fayetteville State. The Bears have already been picked to finished 25th in NCAA Division II by Sporting News, and third among Division II HBCUs by Heritage Sports Radio Network. Shaw was picked to finish in a tie for second with Elizabeth City by the CIAA Coaches Association.
McElveen, a junior from Norwalk, CT, started as a true freshman and is expected to anchor Shaw’s potent offensive line.
Asberry said, “Markus has always been a consistent performer and he’s stepping into a leadership role now that he’s beginning his third year as a starter. I am glad that people outside of Shaw have come to recognize his talents.”
In 2008, McElveen was part of an offensive line that helped lead the Bears to the top spot in almost every category in the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (CIAA) including total offense, scoring offense, passing offense, and total yards.
D2Football.com has quickly become one of the leading information sites for NCAA Division II football, with over three million hits in the past year. D2Football.com writers and editors regularly serve as the “go to” experts on Division II football by radio, newspaper, and ESPN.
Shaw University opens its season on August 29 against Elizabeth City State at 6:00 p.m. at Millbrook High School Stadium.
