Three Shaw Bears Named to All-CIAA Pre-season Team

Three members of the Shaw University football team have made the 2009 All-CIAA Pre-season Team. Running back Raymond Williams, defensive lineman Dewayne Moss, and punt returner Robert Brown all received the honor.

The all-conference team was announced at the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association annual Football Kick-Off Press Conference held on the campus of Virginia State University in Petersburg, VA.

The selection is not only based on the player’s performance in 2008, but the expectation of level of play in the 2009 season.

Shaw University’s All-CIAA Pre-season Team members

Raymond Williams (RB, 6’0" 190) – led the Bears in rushing with 768 yards and eight touchdowns. Williams finished the 2008 season second in the CIAA in yards per rush, rushing touchdowns, kick return yards, and kick return touchdowns. He finished third in the conference in rushing yards. He finished ninth in Division II in kickoff returns. A sophomore majoring in Business Management, Williams is from Cleveland, OH.

Dwayne Moss (DL, 6’4" 275) – had 11 solo tackles and nine assists on a senior-laden 2008 Bears defense. He also had five sacks, ten tackles for a loss, and one recovered fumble. Shaw’s defense finished first in NCAA Division II in most major defensive statistics. The senior from Petersburg, VA, is majoring in Recreation.

Robert Brown III (WR/PR, 5’10" 165) – returned punts for 144 yards in 2008, setting the Shaw Bears single season record. He was also second on the team 13 kickoff returns for 352 yards, and one touchdown. Brown holds the Shaw University records for both longest punt return (69 yards) and longest kickoff return (97). He was on the All-CIAA First Team in 2007. A junior majoring in Public Administration, Brown is from Miami, FL.

In 2008, the Bears finished 8-3 (7-1 in the CIAA) and won the CIAA Championship by defeating Elizabeth City State University 36-7 in the championship game.

The Bears open the 2009 season with a rematch of that 2008 championship game, taking on Elizabeth City State University at Millbrook High School in Raleigh on August 29 at 6:00 p.m.
