Two Bears Named CIAA Players of the Week (Raleigh, NC) –Two Bears were honored as CIAA Players of the Week for their performances in Shaw’s dominating 68-6 victory over Lincoln (PA). The win took the Bears to 4-0, 1-0 in the CIAA.
Smith had four solo tackles, broke up two passes, and recovered a fumble in the end zone for a touchdown. Smith was also named Defensive Back of the Week for his performance in Shaw’s victory over Elizabeth City State in week one. For the season, Smith has four touchdowns – three interception returns for a touchdown and the fumble recovery – making him one of the highest scoring defensive players in the nation. Smith is the leading defensive scorer in the CIAA. Smith’s season statistics also include 12 solo tackles, eight assists, four interceptions, five passes broken up, and two fumble recoveries.
Reid scored nine points – one at a time – as he went nine for nine in point after attempts. Reid is 21 for 21 on PATs and four for four on field goals this season. Prior to this week’s games, Reid was tied for 17th in Division II for field goals, and was second in the CIAA in scoring among kickers, and tied for first in both field goal and PAT percentage. Shaw next travels to Bowie, MD, for the Prince Georges Classic to face Bowie State University at 2:00 p.m. Saturday. The Bears next home game is October 3 at 1:00 p.m., at Millbrook High School against cross-town rival St. Augustine’s.
