Shaw’s Quintez Smith To Play In Texas vs. Nation All-Star Game

(El Paso, TX) – Shaw All-America cornerback Quintez Smith (CB, Dublin, GA) will play in this weekend’s Texas vs. the Nation game.  Smith will play on the Nation team in the game which kicks off at 2:00 p.m. (eastern) at Sun Bowl Stadium in El Paso, TX.

The Texas vs. Nation game pits stars who played in Texas (either in high school or college) against a team of national all-stars.  Players are primarily from Division I schools, including LSU, Fresno State, Texas Tech, Miami, and Tennessee.

Smith has earned a long list of post-season honors.  He was named First Team All-America (Division II) by three different organizations: the American Football Coaches Association, D2Football.com and Daktronics, Inc.   Smith received the highest number of votes among cornerbacks in the Daktronics poll.

He was named to the First Team of both BASN’s HBCU All-America and SBN’s All-American teams, which are made up of Division I-FCS as well as Division II players.  In November, he was also named CIAA Defensive Player of the Year.

He was invited to three other all-star bowl games:  the East Coast Bowl (where he lead both teams in tackles with 13), the HBCU Bowl and the Cactus Bowl.

During the 2009 season, Smith tied a Division II record by returning four interceptions for touchdowns, and led D-II with nine interceptions.  He accumulated 302 interception return yards.  He finished the season with 49 tackles and also scored two touchdowns on fumble returns.

Against Elizabeth City State in week one, Smith set a Division II single game record with 194 interception return yards.  He tied the Division II single game record of three interceptions returned for touchdowns.

Smith was named CIAA Defensive Back of the Week three times this season, and was named D2Football.com’s National Defensive Player of the Week in week one.

Shaw University finished the season 8-2 (5-2 in the CIAA).
