Shaw Ranked Second in HSRN HBCU Division II Poll

(Raleigh, NC) –Fresh off a 54-30 win over CIAA rival Elizabeth City State, Shaw University has been ranked second in Heritage Sports Radio Network’s weekly poll of Division II HBCU football teams.  Shaw received two of the 14 first place votes.

Shaw finished behind Tuskegee who earned 12 first place votes and a total 147 points.  Shaw finished with 137 points.  Rounding out the top five were Albany State (115 points), West Virginia State (84), and CIAA member Virginia State (66). 

In the HSRN pre-season poll, Shaw was ranked third, behind Tuskegee and CIAA division rival Fayetteville State.  Fayetteville State lost to UNC-Pembroke 41-34 in two overtimes, and dropped to seventh in this week’s poll.

ECSU, at ninth, is the only other CIAA school ranked in this week’s Top Ten.

Shaw opened their season by defeating Elizabeth City State 54-30 in a rematch of last year’s CIAA Football Championship game.  Shaw won that game 36-7.

Shaw (1-0) next travels to Daytona Beach, FL, where they will step out of Division II and face FCS power Bethune-Cookman.  Shaw’s next home game is Sat., Sept. 12 against Concordia (AL) at 6 p.m. at Millbrook High School in Raleigh, NC.
