Three Bears Named CIAA Players
of the Week
Head Coach Darrell Asberry
Named Coach of the Week
(Raleigh, NC) –
Straight off of an impressive performance where the defense led Shaw
University to a 54-30 win over Elizabeth City State, three Bears swept the
CIAA Player of the Week honors for defense. In addition, Head Coach Darrell
Asberry was named CIAA Coach of the Week.
Defensive
Back of the Week – Quintez Smith (Sr., Dublin, GA, 6-1, 187)
Smith took command of the game
with three interception returns for touchdowns for a total of 194 return
yards. He also recovered a fumble in the end zone to kill a 42-yard ECSU
drive. In addition, he had three solo tackles and six assists.
Defensive
Lineman of the Week – DeMarcus Roberson (So., Chapel Hill, NC, 6-4, 260)
Roberson set the tone for the
Bears’ smothering defense with five solo tackles, six assists, 3.5 tackles
for a loss and one sack.

Linebacker
of the Week – Frederick Sparkman (Jr., Columbia, TN, 6-2, 220)
Sparkman had nine solo tackles
and seven assists to lead both teams. He had 3.5 tackles for a loss and one
sack.
Coach
of the Week – Darrell Asberry (Fourth year, 20-14 career/Shaw record)
Asberry was recognized for
utilizing his defense and special teams to defeat ECSU when Shaw’s offense
got off to a slow start (no first downs in the first quarter).
Shaw
(1-0) next travels to Daytona Beach, FL, where they will step out of
Division II and face FCS power Bethune-Cookman. Shaw’s next home game is
Sat., Sept. 12 against Concordia (AL) at 6 p.m. at Millbrook High School.
