Robert Brown, III Named Honorable Mention HBCU All-America

(Raleigh, NC) –  Shaw University wide receiver/punt returner/kick returner Robert Henry Brown III has been named Honorable Mention on the 2009 BoxToRow.com/Black Athlete Sports Network (BASN) Preseason HBCU All-America Team as a punt returner.

Brown (5-10, 165), a senior majoring in sociology/criminal justice, was also named to the Pre-Season All-Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) team selected by the CIAA Coaches Association.  Brown holds Shaw University career records for both punt (609 yards) and kickoff (772) returns.  (See below for Brown's place in the Bear Record Book.)

Shaw University Head Coach Darrell Asberry said, “Robert can electrify the crowd and has often turned what could have been difficult field position into good field position.  He’s led the nation in punt returns, but even more, he’s an outstanding young man on and off the field.” 

In 2007, Brown led NCAA Division II in punt returns with 375 yards, easily breaking the Shaw University record.  Last year, he led the team in punt returns with 144 yards, and was second in kick returns with 352 yards.  In 2007, he was named First Team All-CIAA as a punt returner.

Shaw University is preparing to defend its back-to-back CIAA football championships.  Sporting News ranked the Bears 25th in NCAA Division II in their pre-season poll, while Heritage Sports Radio Network predicted that Shaw would finish third among Division II Historically Black College and University (HBCU) football programs.  D2Football.com picked Shaw to finish second in the CIAA, while the CIAA Coaches Association picked the Bears to finish in a tie for second.

Shaw University opens its season on August 29 against Elizabeth City State at 6:00 p.m. at Millbrook High School Stadium in Raleigh, NC.
