FIVE BEARS NAMED TO CIAA COMMISSIONER’S ALL-ACADEMIC TEAM
SU’s Hall & Sabogal Repeat As First Team Honorees
(6/6/06) – Shaw University led the conference with five student-athletes being selected to the ninth annual CIAA Commissioner’s All-Academic Team, the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association announced Tuesday, June 06, 2006.
SU’s senior tennis star Tanisha Hall (Montego Bay, Jamaica) and junior tennis star Daniel Sabogal (Cali, Columbia) are repeat selections on the CIAA Commissioner’s All-Academic First Team, and joining them are teammates Ffion Fletcher (Montego Bay, Jamaica) and Monique Lawson (Montego Bay, Jamaica). Sophomore softball ace Marquita Pittman (Ford Heights, IL) earned Second Team recognition.
“As the CIAA strives to provide excellence through education and athletics, we are pleased to honor those students that have made a true commitment to themselves to make the best of their educational opportunity,” said CIAA Commissioner Leon G. Kerry. “Each of these students exemplifies the meaning of what it is to be self-disciplined, self motivated and a model for others to follow.”
Fletcher, a scholar athlete with a 4.0 GPA as a Computer Information Systems major finished a great athletic and academic career. At the #1 Singles position, she posted a 17-0 record and at #1 Doubles was also unbeaten at 17-0. She won the 2006 CIAA #1 Singles Championship and the 2006 CIAA #1 Doubles Championship. Her two years unbeaten match record is 44-0. She is a two time CIAA Player of the Year (2005, 2006), Two Time CIAA Tournament MVP and led the team to first ever CIAA Tournament Championship this season. Her academic awards include 2005 CIAA Scholar Athlete of the Year…..2005 CIAA Commissioner’s All Academic Team….2005 & 2006 President’s Honor Roll….2006 Highest GPA for Student Athlete at Shaw U……2006 District III CoSIDA ESPN The Magazine Academic All-American At-Large Team First Team selection.
Hall is a senior Business Administration major with a 3.94 GPA, who posted a 14-1 mark at #2 Singles and 13-1 at #2 Doubles. She is also a two time CIAA Champion (2005 & 2006) at both positions. In the classroom she was a 2005 President’s Scholar 4.0 GPA….2006 President’s Scholar 3.94….2005 &2006 Gold Medal Award for GPA….2005 Highest GPA on Tennis Team…2006 CoSIDA ESPN The Magazine Academic All-American Second Team District III selection (Women’s At-Large Team).
Lawson is a junior Sociology major with a 3.96 GPA, who posted a 15-1 mark at the #4 Sinlges 15-1 position and at #3 Singles she was 3-1. She won the 2006 #4 Singles CIAA Championship and was also the 2006 #2 Doubles CIAA Runners-up. Lawson was also a member of the 2005 CIAA Commissioner’s All-Academic Team.
Pittman is a sophomore Political Science major with a 3.93 GPA, who had a successful softball season with 11 RBI’s, one triple, a .220 batting average and a .898% fielding average. She is also a member of the Shaw University Academic Honors Program.
Sabogal is a junior Business Administration major with a 3.90 GPA, who posted 15-0 mark at the #3 Singles 15-0 position and a 3-1 mark at #2 Singles and at the #3 Doubles position he was 12-0, at #1 Doubles he was 2-0 and 2-0 at #2 Doubles. He won the 2006 CIAA Championship at #3 Singles and #3 Doubles. He was a member of the 2005 CIAA Commissioner’s All-Academic Team First Team and was selected as the 2006 Shaw U. Male Scholar Athlete of the Year.
The 2006 CIAA Commissioner’s All-Academic Team recognizes 20 student-athletes, 10 on the First Team and 10 on the Second Team, as voted on by the CIAA-Sports Information Directors’ Association. The average grade point average of the First Team is a 3.814, and the average for the Second Team is a 3.850 GPA (on a 4.0 scale).
The 2006 CIAA Commissioner’s All-Academic First Team consists of Carlos Gutierrez of Elizabeth City State; Clarisse Steans and Steve Wright of North Carolina Central; Ffion Fletcher, Tanisha Hall, Monique Lawson and Daniel Sabogal of Shaw; Valicia Brown and Rebecca Hubbard of Saint Augustine’s; and Shannon Davis of Winston-Salem State (see attachment).
The 2006 CIAA Commissioner’s All-Academic Second Team includes Bobby Bienaimee and Brittany Sumpter of Johnson C. Smith; Emily Nwakpuda of North Carolina Central; Issreal Jaimes and Dorothy Vernoy of Saint Augustine’s; Marquita Pittman of Shaw; Bridgette Booker and Jermaine LaFate of Virginia State; and Andrew Jones and Chad Oakley of Winston-Salem State.
To be eligible, a student-athlete must have completed one full academic year at a CIAA institution, earned a minimum 3.20 overall grade point average, and played as a starter or important reserve in a CIAA sanctioned sport.
